1. When a thread gets longer than 10 pages, you can't seem to jump to the last page. You have to jump to 10, and then go up page by page.
2. What about a real time chat place?? Nothing fancy or what have you, but on a couple of occassions i've had sort of email conversations in real time (and seen it occur in some other threads) which just ends up clogging the board with extra posts, and isn't always the most convenient. Could be fun to talk to maybe people as and when (i suppose it would be an extension of the "who's online" idea).
Not sure whether it would work best as an open board which anybody could drop into (can get confusing with lots of simultaneaous conversations), or specific 1 on 1 - or more - where you see who's online and can open chat windows with them. Or both.
Am just idly speculating.
Would it be feasible?
Online at the same time? Kinda like now, lol
I would definately go for an instant message/chat thing. People on here are great and it would be fun to pick their brains a bit more in a non-discussion board setting.
A bit like now, yes
But (gets very scared) Picking brains???? That implies that people actually need to have brains to be on here?? Well, you could try picking fresh air if you really wanted, but otherwise, guess that counts me out
Fresh air is fine, it'll be kinda like one of them oxygen bars....lol
Peter - just following that further. if not feasible for a chat type place actually here, what about a way of logging msn/aim address etc if people are happy to be contacted that way??? Admittedly not ideal, but a possibility. The hard part is doing it so that the email addresses required can't be harvested by spammers but something like
would give the details without being auto-grabible
Will look into that last post phenomena - I think we only have one thread with that problem in the meanwhile, when you're looking at the list of threads, the 'last post by ..' link still manages to go to the last post.
Re: live chat .. you're quite right Rich, it would be nice to have an option like that as well. I used to attend one of those and was totally addicted - admittedly I probably don't need any more addictive things on this site, but hey. I have seen some code around to achieve something like this, so it certainly is a feasible option. Two things have pretty much stopped me so far from looking into it more seriously. 1 is that it would be near impossible to moderate (without employing people worldwide around the clock). 2 is that it would be totally boring if no-one was there. As the first problem becomes more of a problem, the second one is less of a problem, due to the increasing popularity of the forums. I'm convinced we would manage to keep it pretty lively and I would certainly join in regularly. As far as structuring it, we could choose to make it a free for all conversation, or alternatively private conversations, where people are invited to join in by the conversation starter. That may also fix the moderation issue, as the conversation starter would also be the moderator for that topic. What do you think?
Other than that, AIM, ICQ or Messenger IDs would be an option. Obviously, this can always be achieved through private messages. I'd be more inclined to build one here. All in due course naturally
First I'll look into that 10 pages problem.
