And on that whole "Great Britian" thing: Is Northern Ireland not part of the United Kingdom? As in "The United Kingdom of Great Britian and Northern Island"? Says so on the passports, anyway...

Yes - Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom, but not part of Great Britain. England+Scotland+Wales=Great Britain; Great Britain+Northern Ireland=the United Kingdom.

I think what he is trying to say is it would be like trying to have a three-some with 2 people. Still good, but not as great!

Try as I might, I can't see it. But having said that, I think we'll get along just fine

Yes, Northern Ireland is part of Great Britian. For some reason, the British clung onto it when they left/got tossed out of Ireland. I am inclined to think they did this out of petty minded stuborness, which is a sin of course.

If there are any history gurus here who know of any more important reason than petty minded stuborness, please inform me. I have never been able to get any explanation for it.

To be honest you are now starting to get into the realms of poltics and religion Mel - there is a whole internet of information out there should you wish an explaination. I have strong points of view on this subject which are totally to do with the way in which l was raised and the community into which l was born - but they are private and l am not going to start trying to explain the union of Northern Ireland which is not part of Great Britain (it is part of the United Kingdom) - the unionists which had the majority in the Northen chose to stay part of the UK.

I cannot believe someone raised in Ireland did cover in school, the civil rising and cover the various treaties which lead to the partition of the North and the 6 counties from the rest of the Irish Republic. And your explaination will totally depend on the view point and the political stance you choose to take.

Once again a thread which has gone way off topic.

A deadly sin - refusing a drink - gotta be a hanging offence!
