Hi, you can definitely go to the barrier reef and travel to Port Douglas and Cap Trib. I have stayed few years ago at the YHA in Cairns, not bad and you can book there all your excursions ;) Hope it Helps!

Hi Kirst

You will have a BALL in Cairns!! There are plenty of Hostels there - I am sure you will not have any trouble in finding one that suits you.

One suggestion I have is - ask the people you are with now ie the hostel and/or the backpackers for the type of hostel you want. Visit other hostels and ask/put a notice up.

Depending on your budget - please make sure you go to Cape Tribulation. There are plenty of places to stay but if you want the hostel type stuff then the pub there has a great backpackers!! Although I stayed elsewhere (and LOVED it!!) if I was a young backpacker then the pub was the place to stay.

Cape Trib is just amazing.

Then there is the Karunda Railway http://www.cairns-australia.com/101980.php.

and SkyRail http://www.skyrail.com.au/

I adored the area down south of Cairns - towards Innisfail. And then throughout the mountains over to the Tablelands.

If you have time and the budget - get yourself onto a tour up to Cooktown and/or even further north....

You will love it all up there - it is wonderful.....

Have fun!!

Kathryn

Hey there,
I left Oz recently and spent one of my last weeks (and a bit) up in Cairns. It was my first time being on my own. It's a great spot.
I stayed in Calypso which is an awesome place. The people are so friendly and helpful but somewhere closer to the center might be good - try Gilligans, the International, YHA, Global Palace.

For the Great Barrier Reef I would definitely recommend doing a trip from Cape Tribulation. I did it there and it was great. We were the only boat out on the water and the water was crystal. A few people I met that did a trip from Cairns said visibility wasn't great. PKs is supposed to be really good up there. I think that's the place isnoo is talking about.

I did Uncle Brian's tour of the Tablelands and it's BRILLIANT. Highly recommended.... :D

Hey Kirst, me and a friend are in Cairns at the mo and staying at Calypsos, its a great place and even though its about a 15-20 minute walk from the city they have a free bus service that runs so if u dont fancy the walk, get a bus! You'll definantly be able to go on a trip to the reef from here. Let me know if you book at Calypsos as we'll be here for a while, Claire x
