ikey has indicated that this thread is about Vietnam

Hi Travellers

Heading off to Vietnam in August for the first time and wanting to learn a little more about the country beofre I get there.

Does anyone know of any interesting books or movies about Vietnam and it's culture, history, etc. (Book or movies that DON'T focus on the American-Vietnam War would be a bonus but not a must.)

Thanks guys

Just get a lonely planet book . Its enough to start you off , when you get to Vietnam you are overwhelmed with book sellers , and they are really cheap. Basically they are copies of original books but they do a really good job of them.

I agree with Paul - just get the Lonely Planet guide book . You can't go wrong with them.

Also, check out this website. It might be of interest to you. http://www.viettouch.com/hist/

hi,

I read 'Catfish and Mandala' by Andrew X. Pham just after I visited Vietnam; it's a really good read and provides some interesting insights into Vietnam, its people and culture.

As the previous posts advise, LP books always provide a good historical and cultural overview.

Maybe I should have been more specific but I'm after a novel not a reference book or travel guide. Thanks.

Vietnam, Now: A Reporter Returns - by David Lamb
Terrific book, I read it while traveling through Vietnam and loved it. A great read. It opened my eyes up to the culture, the American War, and the healing.
And don't worry, it is not a tour book.
Enjoy the book and Viet nam!

A fellow volunteer I lived with in Hanoi brought the book from the US and I borrowed it from her, but wasn't able to finish before the volunteer gig was over. So I searched all over Hanoi, but was not able to find the book. Vietnam has opened way up, but the Government still watches what people read. But on the flip side, there is no such thing as copy right laws there, so I had the book photocopied, complete with a binder, all for something like $2 US. I finished the book after I parted from my Volunteering stint and now the photocopied book is being passed around my friends and family back home.
Long story short, I doubt you can get the book in Vietnam.

If its going to be difficult to buy it out there, you might as well buy it online now. Its on loads of websites such as Amazon.

Thanks for the book suggestion, I look forward to reading it!
