I will be going to thailand in September and because of the rains I have decided to keep my trip pretty open with exception of booking a hotel for the full moon party. I was wondering if it will be difficult to get a last minute flight from Koh Samui to Phuket or back to Bangkok. It looks like only Bangkok airways flys in and out of Koh Samui.
Also will it be difficult to get a boat from Koh Samui to Koh Phanagn the day before and after the full moon party. Any information would be helpful.
If the sea is too rough, which it sometimes is during the rainy season, the boats wont go.
As for availability, just before and just after the full moon parties, there are several boats going per day, from more than one company. There probably would be a place available for u. Book the trip to Koh Pha Ngan, as soon as u get to Koh Samui.
About boats, during the rainy season, dont make your schedule too tight. Make sure u leave a good margin of error, or have an alternative plan for when things dont go as planned.
I cant comment about flights, because I never took domestic flights in Thailand.
I haven't been to Koh Samui yet but I'm planning on going in Sept/Oct this year so done a bit of research. I've read in quite a few different places that Bangkok airways have a monopoly on flights to and from the island and charge accordingly! However I've taken flights to Phuket and various other places and they are all pretty cheap reliable and frequent, so maybe you could get a flight to Phuket or Krabi and arrange travel from there to Koh Samui. You can get a return flight from Bangkok to Krabi with air asia for about 50-60 US dollars but not sure how easy it is to get across to the other coast to get the boat to Koh Samui.
The flight from BKK to Koh Samui with Bangkok airways will cost 160-170 us dollars return and thats getting flights at 6 in the morning to get the cheapest prices!!
You can get coach and boat packages for much less than a flight, but they take quite a long time to get there and I've heard a few horror stories of theft etc. So I guess it really depends on whether you have enough time to spare or whether money is a limiting factor.
Here are some links to budget airlines that operate in Thailand so have a look and see if you can find a flight to suit you;
