The transit rail system, or "The T" as it's known locally, is very good.

Boston is one of America's great walking cities, just follow the Freedom Trail and see the sights.

Jassa,
You may want to visit the President Kennedy Library while in Boston. I found it worth the time & money. I also recommend you take a 'DUCK' tour while downtown. These are amphibious vechicles that were used in WWII. You tour the city and then they go on the Charles River, fun and informative. I would also try to take in Lexington & Concord, Walden Pond. There are many historic places in the city and just outside of the city that are worth your consideration. Take a look at the list of tourist sights and decide what interests your family.

Like most American cities, Boston has sections that I would not walk around at night. Check with your hotel about what streets are OK at night and what sections to avoid. Boston has plenty to see and do, I am sure you will have a great time. Good Luck on your American adventure.

If time permits, visit Harvard Square, Copley Square, Boston Common, the Boston Public Garden, and the Boston Harbor Islands. Grab a copy of the "Boston Phoenix" to get a sense of events going on in the city.

Hope this helps,

Pranav

There are lots of ferries that go around Boston Harbor--I found these fun, the views spectacular, and the cost quite reasonable.

You may want to consider taking the UNOFFICIAL Harvard Tour (formerly HAHVAHD TOURS). It's conducted by two Harvard students and is a lot more fun than the official tour, in my opinion.

When you don't feel comfortable about an area or location - leave - sometime you have to heed your instincts! Obviously, late, late at night I would avoid areas where you see a lot of aimless "young men" aimlessly hanging around street corners and alleys! Good ideal to check with your hotel to find out particular areas you should avoid at night.

If you are driving you could use a hotel in one of the smaller towns outside Boston and save some money on expensive hotels. You may be able to get a hotel near a T stop and not have to drive in Boston at all!

The subway system is pretty good and a bargain compared to taxi service. Even if you have a car with you it may cheaper to take the subway (T) and save the expensive parking fees! Besides the "Duck Tours" check one or two of the Museums out.

You can also take the MBTA local train system to Providence, RI. The train ride from South Station to Providence is not that expensive and this would give you a look at a different city than Boston.
