Hi everyone ",)
Can anyone tell me does it take long to get your tax number when you arrive in Oz and what exactly do you have to do to get it? If they ask for an address, can you give the hostel your staying in as your address? Also, is it tricky to set up a bank account over there? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, cheers ",)

I imagine it would take 4-8 weeks to get your TFN (tax file number) from the ATO upon arrival. It can be sent either to an address here or to one overseas, for someone to open and fax/email to you if your housing arrangements in Aus are slightly unpredictable.
You can apply online or get a form from most post offices (I think). Online is a definite, try http://www.ato.gov.au.
It's not tricky to set up a bank account, a passport should be sufficient plus a driver's licence (Australia has a 100 point system for the provision of an accurate identity).
Try any of the majoy banks websites for info: they include ANZ, Westpac, NAB and the Commonwealth Bank.

As a traveller, just a passport counts for the full 100 points during the first 30 days (?) after arrival. However, after that it becomes nearly impossible, as I don't think they accept overseas drivers licenses (instead, they want utility bills sent in your name to a residential address in Australia).

when i was in Oz i applied for my tax file number online............a very straight forward process.

Yes just give the address of where u are staying for it to be sent there......... I was staying in a campsite and i just let the reception know that there was something coming for me and they let me know as soon as it arrived,

It came within 7 days.

As for the bank account i never opened one myself in australia but i know people that did and from what i hard its an easy process
