Good ol' New Zealand scum

A New Zealand company is working on algae-based biofuel for Air New Zealand (and hopefully for all of aviation, if it turns out successfully).

Of course this won't stop airplanes dumping tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, but now it'll be CO2 that got taken out of the atmosphere virtually the very same moment, rather than CO2 that the world had safely sequestered away millennia ago. And I'd be very surprised if the CO2 cost of producing this new fuel won't turn out to be lower than that of the whole oil processing industry, either.

Wow!!!

Yeah, I hope this fuel happens soon.
Knowing I am contributing to trashing the environment, takes the edge off the joy of travelling.

I think, more correctly, it's that the amount of CO2 released by a bio-fuel is equivalent to the amount of CO2 that the plants absorbed while growing, so you are "carbon-neutral" in the fact that the amount of carbon in the atmosphere is the same as when you started. Fossil fuels, on the other hand, are releasing CO2 that has been trapped in some other form back into the atmosphere as a gas, and that is raising the level of CO2 overall in the atmoshpere.
