you could go on some organised tours geared towards backpackers rather than doing trips on your own, ie for the day or weekend. also the noticeboards at hostels often contain adverts from backpackers looking for travel companions - although most of these might be for travel further afield, you never know what you might come across. what about doing a search for expat groups in melbourne? i'm sure there are loads of people like yourself who have emigrated or are living in melbourne and don't know many people.

definitely look into doing some group tours eg. Great Ocean Road, Phillip Island. You'll meet backpackers on these who could become long-term friends or at least someone to keep in touch with and explore Melbourne on your days off. Check out the Friendly Travel desk at the Greenhouse Backpackers on Flinders Lane. They have lotsa tours they can get you on to, and are really helpful, so could offer advice on which are the best to make contacts on :)

I've recently left Melbourne and loved the place!! Have fun!
