Hey, I'm an Australian resident and am travelling to the uk in November this year. I've got a working holiday maker visa and thus i will be looking to spend 1-2yrs in the UK. I am not sure as to where i am going to 'base myself' for my travels. I have mainly been looking at London and Scotland, but am still not sure. Also, I am looking to share a flat for accommodation, at the moment this seems to be the better option as my research tells me it is a lot cheaper. So is flat-sharing the best option? Where does everyone recommend i base myself?

If you are planning on travelling around the whole of the UK I would suggest basing yourself in either Liverpool or Manchester as they are both pretty much in the middle and are both really good cities. It is also Liverpool Capital of Culture year next year so lots of stuff going on. Manchester though probably has better rail links as trains go through Manchester while as Liverpool is by the coast, it is at the end of the line.

When I went to the UK on a working holiday visa I chose London as my base for a number of reasons. Lots of museums, art galleries, attractions, great night life, etc. Also, I knew there would be many job opportunites as well especially in retail and office work. On weekends I would take the train to Portsmouth, or Bath, or any town that I wished to explore.

Cheers,

Petra
