When i went there (on a guided tour), our guide told us that many many visitors manage to flip over their 4x4's due to the conditions, and cause a lot of damage to the vehicles which ruins their experience. And we saw many which had either been ditched or flipped over!

Thats the only negative i can think of why not to self drive.

so it should be better for two girls to take part in a guided tour

im not necesarily saying its better to go on a tour, if ure confident in driving a 4x4 on the mega bumpy sandy tracks and u know where u wanna go then go for it.

The tours are pretty cool though, takes u to all the main places to see, you can enjoy extra add ons such as a ride in a small plane over the Island. Obviously you can find a tour with an itenary to suit yourselves.

It all depends on which u prefer:

Driving ure own 4x4 and having all the freedom in the world

or

Bein on a 4x4 bus with 10-15 other people with a tour leader telling you all about the Island and going where the tour promises

When I was in oz 5yrs ago i did a trip from Rainbow Beach to Fraser island. When we arrived at Rainbow Beach we were split into groups of 8 and then given a 4x4 and from there we were on our own as a group. In that way it wasn't as rigid as a group tour we could camp where we wanted and go to the sites that we wanted to see. Also i found that the guys we were in a group with wanted to drive most of the time, in fact don't think i drove at all so that solves the not wanting to drive probs. Also a bit of muscle is helpful when you get the van stuck in the sand! Although i'm pretty sure we got stuck because of the way the guys were driving but hey!
