I have just booked for 3 nights in Budapest for New Year. Can anyone recommend things to do/places to go on New Year's eve?

I was there in January '05 and it was absolutely freezing! I can't help re NYE, but I can definitely recommend walking across Chain Bridge and up to Fisherman's Bastion at night (you can either walk, or take the funicular) - the views are stunning across the Danube to the Parliament building!

Another tip would be to get a bus to Statue Park. It's where all the communist statues / sculptures were taken to in 1991 when the Iron Curtain fell - some of them are huge because I'd recently been to Russia, I got goosebumps looking at the statues of Stalin, Lenin etc! (Or maybe that was just the cold?!)

Finally, there are some pretty spectacular natural thermal baths there. I can't remember the name of the one I went to, but it was near a huge monument (Victory Monument?), a park with a funfair a ice-skating rink and a sort of mini-castle? Maybe someone else can confirm which one it was, but here is a lonk to the baths:

Enjoy!
