Hello I will soon be traveling to South America on an extended mission trip and am trying to gather as much info as possible to save money time and frusteration. if you could post here any info that you know that you think i might be able to use i would really apreciate it! there will be seven other people with me!
here are some of my major questions:
1) what is the cheapest way to get to south america from pretty much any where else in the americas? the best ive found is flying copa from miami to bogata for $400usd round trip!
2) what is the best vehilce i could buy to travel there. two small motorhomes? two vans, pick ups or jeeps? school bus? any other ideas?
3) is it legal to buy a vehicle down there?
4) Is it logical to think of doing any type of camping tent or RV?
5) are there any other ways to stay than crowded hostels or expensive hotels?}
6) Does any one have any info on shipping a vehicle to Any part of South America thats consistant and reliable?

I know Im asking for alot but I could really use the help and suggestions! Thanks Everbody!

God Bless

Too many dumb newbie questions put off knowledgeable posters.

Your ideas about South America are so nebulous, so naive and so scattered that it's hard to know where to start.

Also if Mission Trip means you're preaching some religion you won't find many fellow travellers in this place-sympathy is in short supply for you/your type.

How's your Spanish?

Do you think that's a lot? You are talking about an international flight of 1,506 miles. Anyway, if your dates are flexible, you could try checking out some of the tools listed in this thread on getting cheaper flights: how to find cheaper flights.

2) what is the best vehilce i could buy to travel there. two small motorhomes? two vans, pick ups or jeeps? school bus? any other ideas?

Are you going to have a lot of stuff? 7 people can fit in 2 cars, or one van. Why would you need multiple vehicles?

Anyway, are you completely sold on getting a car? Public transit (i.e. buses) in South America are very good and inexpensive.

3) is it legal to buy a vehicle down there?

Yes. You'll need an international drivers license. Decide specifically where you want to buy the car, and then google "buy a car in ..." (where you replace ... with the country or city name), and you should find some good advice. Here's some advice on buying a car in Argentina, or example: Buy a car in Argentina?

4) Is it logical to think of doing any type of camping tent or RV?

Yes, both are possible. The lonley planet should list camp sights. You don't really say where you are going, but higher elevations and down south can get pretty cold to be outside.

5) are there any other ways to stay than crowded hostels or expensive hotels?

You already mentioned camping.

You could try doing homestays, especially if you are staying in a place for a while. If you are on a mission trip, isn't there churches or religious organizations that you can contact to suggest places where you could billet?

6) Does any one have any info on shipping a vehicle to Any part of South America thats consistant and reliable?

Here's a link, but in general I think this is a very expensive way to go.

Your questions are not specific to a country. Try narrowing down exactly where you want to go, and ask specific questions about the country, and you'll find you get better responses. Frankly, by asking about "South America" as a whole, you come off as being a little naive about how large a continent you are talking about. It's a very diverse place in terms of geography, cultures, ethnicities and weather.
