Hi

We plan to visit LA end of December to New Year. We are thinking of visiting San Diego as welll to visit the Aquarium. How is the weather in SD and new year? How far is it from LA to SD? Any hostel recommendations. Thanks.

LA / San Diego are about 2 - 3 hours apart depending on traffic and where you are starting from etc. could even do it in 1 hour the right time of day. The weather is crisp that time of year, meaning 60 degrees and a sweat shirt. It does vary during the day, getting down to 40 at night near the ocean and cool in the morning. I have never stayed in a hostel in Southern California, so I am no help on that.

One year I went to the Rose Parade in Pasadena Jan 1... It is something to do once not sure I will do it again. You may want to go to Sea World. It is not an Aquarium but you may like it, it's similar. It is easy to get between the two cities as long as traffic does not bother you. Have fun!

Highly recommended, based on polls is http://www.hostels.com/en/availability.php/HostelNumber.823http Or try //www.sandiegohostels.org/ for a choice of a hostel in the Gaslamp Quarter or Point Loma.

I've lived in San Diego for over 20 years and have seen the temperatures anywhere from the low 50's F to the high 70's F during December and January. The usual train of thought...dress in layers.

If you are going from the heart of San Diego to downtown LA, I would plan on a three hour drive, (and that's if traffic is good!)

Besides visiting Sea World, you may want to also see the San Diego Zoo and stroll around Balboa Park, (next to the zoo), which is beautiful during the Holiday Season. Also, the Maritime Museum on the Embarcadero is worthy of a visit.

Expect nice weather and a great time.

It's two hours to LA (120 miles)--not 1 hour unless you are already way south of town already down in Orange County.

On a busy day (meaning M-F and not summer), traffic will be bad leaving town so allow at least an extra 1/2 hour.

Things to do: Go out to Mission Bay and either sail or rent waverunners. Go to the Gaslight District or Old San Diego. Go the the Zoo--best one in the world in my opinion. Hang out at one of the beaches (Pacific Beach, Ocean Beach, or for the naturalists out there--Black's Beach). They also have hang gliders at the top of the cliffs near this beach.

Sea World is also fun if you've never been there--lots of great shows.

And San Diego is famous (along with Palm Springs) for having lots of great golf courses.

If you are there in the summer, the thoroughbred horses are racing at Del Mar--famous for its line "Where the Turf meets the surf".

Enjoy

Great recommendation on the Del Mar Racetrack, (*sigh* lots of great memories of that place...I still can hear Trevor Denmon..and remember the great hats...) OK HEART of SD to HEART of LA...? (Lucky to do Carlsbad to LA in less than 2 hours...)
