Heading to Melbourne at the start of November for a month then spending December in Sydney, then for my final month making my way up to Cairns. Will a month in each Melbourne and Sydney be too long to spend as I won't be working????

Although both cities have a ton to see (with caveats: Sydney really has sights to see; in Melbourne it's more sniffing up atmosphere in its countless neighbourhoods and languidly enjoying your days sipping coffee sitting out in the sun), a month actually spent in them as a tourist would be too much, yeah. I'd say two weeks max (maybe, for Sydney only, three).
However, there's easily two weeks worth of stuff to do around each city too. From Melbourne you could head west over the great ocean road, cut north to the grampians, east toward the Bendigo wine region, southeast to lakes entrance, to then head west back to melbourne via wilsons promontery and Phillip Island. (*counts up the days* yeah, that'd fit in two weeks... barely) :)

For Sydney, head west to the Blue Mountains (take one of the hourly trains) for 4 or 5 days, and maybe south to Wollongong or north to Newcastle for 2-3 days each.
