I have reserved (for a nominal fee so if its crap do let me know now cos l will only loose £3!) a guest house in HCMC for the first few days when we arrive - we havent arranged any other accomodation as everyones advise has been sort it out when you arrive there. But lm just wondering anyone ever heard of it or even the area - from reading around lm guessing it is the backbacker area which is cool but l always like to get personal recommendations where possible!
The hostel is Redsun Hotel 283/17 Pham Ngu Lao St, Dist 1. Ho Chi Minh anyone aware of it?
I haven't heard of this particular hotel but it is in the main backpacker area as you thought. Accommodation in vietnam does tend to be of a high standard even at the budget end of the market so i think this place will be ok. I stayed in 'mini hotel alley' in this area and our hotel was fine.
I have not stayed at the Redsun Hotel either, but it should be fine. Almost all of the hotels in the Pham Ngu Lao area are very similar. Narrow and tall. Land is expensive in HCMC so they go up. I have also stayed in 'mini hotel alley' and you generally end up on the 4-5 floor. Lot of stairs everyday, but at least it is quieter higher up, less street noise. I paid $6/nite for a fan room, $10/nite for an air con room. If you paid much more than this, I would switch after your first night.
Just checked the price you quoted Mike and it hits the mark $8.50 for a private bathroom A/C room! Thats cool dont mind stairs - bit of exercise do me the world of good! Great that we are near centre of things and should meet others to help plan our itinerary!
Thanks for the info guys - off now to research more into Malaria drugs!
Just read a review on yahoo travel and they said the following
"The Redsun hotel has a very welcoming and attentive atmosphere. You will feel at home the moment you enter and it’s an ideal place for world travellers to meet people who all about travelling around Vietnam. The Red Sun Lounge, with its jolly electric organ, is the perfect place to unwind"
What it the name of goodness is this and how does an jolly electric organ help you relax????????
I have visions of the organist in the Tower in Blackpool rising out of the ground playing a selection of "easy listening muzak"
haha, you will have to fill us in on what exactly the organ is!
i looked on hostelworld for your hotel and it got good reviews.
My boyfriend and I have just left HCMC and the Red Sun hostel was one of our choices to stay at....however no-one told us how hideously busy HCMC gets and that you should book in advance as the hotels get so full!
Anyway, the Red Sun hotel was nice, we didn't stay there and I only saw the lobby but it was very popular and constantly booked. The hotel is in a tiny side alley off Pham Ngu Lao Street (THE main busy road int he budget area), so you will have to keep an eye out for the little sign saying 283 Pham Ngu Lao.
I have a couple of recommendations for food and drinks, so if you want to PM me, I'll send you the details!
