This thread is marked as being about Thailand

I'm going to have £5,000 after insurance, flights, etc etc, I'm just wondering whether this is going to be enough to travel around thailand, vietnam, cambodia, laos, malaysia and indonesia - we're also looking to travel to Hong Kong 9by train or bus) .... just wondering if by eating well and living in the cheapest hostels (28th dec - 28th april) i can will be able to manage on my budget? many thanks.

£5000 will be more than enough for your trip - I would say you would spend nearer half that. I spent 3 months in SE Asia - I can't remember exactly how much I spent but it was nowhere near £5000. Expect to pay $8- $15 for a budget en suite room in most countries - HK is more expensive though and more similar to Western prices.

I could easily spend a year, if not more, in Southeast Asia for 5000 pounds. And that's not even living on a really tight budget. You use both "I" and "we" in your post, so I'm not sure if you mean that you have 5000 pounds for two of you travelling together, or just for yourself, but either way, you have more money than the average backpacker.
Living on a fairly tight budget, but always leaving room for good food and a couple beers a night, my girlfriend and I together tend to budget around 15-18 pounds per day. When I'm in the region on my own I probably spend around 10 pounds a day.
So for 4 months you have a budget of somewhere around 40 pounds a day, which is about 4 times more than I spend on my own.
So you can go and live like a king and spend like crazy, you could travel for twice as long, or you can come home with half your money to spare - you got lots of options with that kind of money.

I spent £2500 in 2 months but absolutely kicked the arse out of it without watching my money at all .
That even included a £300 tattoo . I was drinking most days and every night , buying clothes and paying for accommodation and transport by myself . Your money should be well enough , and that's what you want for your first trip , you don't want to be budgeting yourself all the time because its very easy to get carried away on your first trip , it better just to relax and know that you can have a great time with the money you have . Have a good one , am off again in Jan .. Cant wait
