I would just take one pair of flip flops and one pair of trainers, unless you are considering doing any serious trekking anywhere. that's what I took and I was fine. once you get to sydney you can buy any other footwear if you need anything different for Oz.

Teva sandals are awesome, you can go anywhere in them, they're comfortable and let your feet breathe while still giving you enough support. I hiked the desert states of the US in a pair of these, and consider them the one pair of footwear i must have while travelling :)

I did the same area as your doing and i brought way too many shoes!
Although my hikingboots came to good use every now and then (Khao Sok f.i. ) I don't think I would have been worse off with a good pair of trainers.
Rest of the trip it was flip flops (which I'm still wearing and I've been home almost 2 months).

Knowing a little bit better I think next time I'll wear my trainers on the plane and buy a cheap pair of flips in Bangkok.

(I'm usually devoted to Ecco sandals but they were much too heavy and not worth dragging around)
