They are legally bound to do this in the UK - Employment Law which is basically what is being discussed here comes down strongly on the side of the employee.

If an employee who feels a company is being discriminatory or unfair - whether in salary or career advancement or whatever have every given right to take action and call into question the decisions made.

The UK laws are more strict than Canadian laws I think, but a similar situation exists in Canada:

Pay Legislation

Pretty well goes against the Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms, probably the second most fundamental law of the land (after the one that made us a country). The government is behind you, but it's still up to the individual to look after themselves.

I already tried that route, Q. Nothin' doin'.

I know that, T. But thanks. I was mildly interested in where she/he was going with that parents from the PRC bit. Considering I am from the PRC.

Of course I do. You think the Canadian government or Chinese government will protect you ?

U dont think that Canada offers a safe refuge, for asylum seekers?
Surely, u believe that people comming from countries where their safety is under threat should be taken in, by the first safe country they can get to? Well, maybe u dont think this should happen. Not everybody does.:(
Yes, the Chinese government would not offer any protection. In fact it is the Chinese government, that people often need to be protected from.

HR depts (UK LAW) must report to governing bodies on salary, age,sex and religion of employees on an annual basis - those who do not face severe pennalties.

How can the employee assess if (s)he is being treated unfairly, if the information to show this is kept secret? And how can a person fight age discrimination, if it is legal, for a company to pay younger people less?

HR departments must report, but will the employees of their company have access to these reports?

There are exceptions out there but the majority of UK (and l can only comment on UK employers) employers will treat their employees "fairly" and within the "remits of the law". That statement is very broad and sweeping BUT, in my opinion its true.

Purdy, I dont know about other groups, but women get payed less than men do, in the UK, for the same job. If u want I will find the reports for u later. They are on the internet.
Maybe, while I am at it, I will take a look at the reports for non white races. I will be well pleased if the reports about race are not as dismal as the ones about sex. I dont need to check if there is age discrimination in the UK, since age related discrimination is legal, in the UK.

Let me see if I have this straight: We started wondering what minimum wages were in various countries. Right? Now we seem to be arguing about the "fairness" of wages and the ethics of companies. Huh? OK, here goes......

How much more would you, dear Mel, like to wander off in a socialist haze finding perceived injustices? I mean really, what's next? How about we socialize everything.....work, health care, grocery shopping....everyone gets exactly the same treatment, the same wages, the same mundane little lives. We'll have a strong central government that will ensure that all is fair in life. Nobody will have any say whatsoever about anything, because now all the rules are firm and straightforward. Violate the rules, you'll be punished. Wow, this sounds a bit like 1920 Moscow. Or 1934 Berlin. Or 1984....kind of puts the screws to any form of original thought or creativity, doesn't it. But that doesn't matter, because it will be "FAIR".

Is it really necessary to paint all companies with the same brush of "unfairness"? You have no idea at all how many companies are far above the ethical curve.

Life isn't always fair - get used to it. Do you really want everything handed to you? Do you understand the concept of achievment through hard work and experience? I don't want my tax dollars going to subsidize some ignorant little children who don't like the system. I've busted my ass to get to where I am now and I'll be damned if some piss-ant kid is coming in here and making my salary right at the start because someone thinks everyone should earn the same for the same job. It's no different than respect: Respect is earned, not given. Higher salaries are earned, not given.

Pregnant women and mothers?

Your tax dollars are more likely to be funding the Iraqi war.

Shouldnt somebody who is younger and faster get payed more than some cranky burntout old man?
