Hi!
I'm a Canadian student and i'm leaving in five months for France to be an exchange student. I am super excited and more than a little nervous! I don't speak perfect French and have never been, can anyone give me some advice on what to expect in the way for family/general customs? Thanks in advance!

Hi Dreamgirl,

I wouldn't expect an alien society so don't be too nervous ;)

You could have a look at these websites:

http://www.sprachcaffe.com/english/study_abroad/countries/france/typical_french_traditions.htm

http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/France/Local_Customs-France-BR-1.html

If you prefer a more literate approach you might want to read a book by Stephen Clarke...hilarious

Hello Dream Girl:)

If u like good food and restaruants, express your appreciation, by making these things important. A priority even.
The French can sometimes be a bit short, with people who dont speak French, but not everybody is like that. And if u speak some French, they will like it. It certainly does not have to be perfect.
Also, if u know about French literature, that will be looked well upon. If u have not read this stuff, they may look at u in disbelief.
A habit of French people and most Europeans for that matter, is to hang out in cafes. Just to drink coffee and people watch. So if u do that in France u will be doing what the French do.
