I am Indian and will be going to Italy for a few months on assignment.
My question is: Do the natives look more like me (fair complexion, dark hair, brown eyes) and welcome me with open arms or they look more typical european?

If do believe Italians, generally speaking, differ in looks from north to south. In the north, it's not uncommon to see blonde-blue-eyed natives, whereas further south you'll see people with darker skin and brown eyes. Tourists of every complexion and culture and language visit Italy - it's such a beautiful place. I wouldn't worry about fitting in! You'll be one of many, many people enjoying the sites and the people and the hospitality (and the gelato!).
Enjoy your trip!
i don't think being indian can bring you problems, italian is a multi cultural state
If you watch football, maybe Filippo Inzaghi and Alessandro Nesta look like your people....
And your countrymen, Arjun Rampal and John Abraham might look like Italians....
If you have that look, then you can be Italian by look.
Well, there should not be a problem for you to survive there for few months i suppose....
