Hello, Im doing the east coast as part of my RTW trip with my girl friend we are both qualified advanced divers and want somewhere good to dive the barrier reef. I have heard many stories about not to dive from Caines as its too busy the boats are too big etc. We will be on a budget so can't afford to dive everywhere we go does any one know somewhere we can dive from in maybe a small boat and group in a great spot to see the best stuff?

Its an Island Resort. Famous for Wild Dolphin feeding. You can try there.
Or maybe the Hayman Island. Its pretty nice. Less tourist.

Places I recommend.
Cairns I wrote a heap about it in the destination guide.
Uluru-Ayers Rocks and Alice Springs
You can either drive down the coast or inland. We went inland, a bit boring but you see alot more wildlife. Emu's, deer, roo's black cockatoos.. etc. It's quite nice.If it's raining I recommend the coast as it floods inland pretty shocking.

yEAH.. That's my 2 bobs worth

The Yongala Wreck is the place to dive, off the coast from Ayr. Better to do it from Ayr than Townsville, think its 3hr boat ride from Townsville, 30mins from Ayr. Didnt do it myself as I am new to diving and you needed minimum 6 logged dives, and being advanced is better as you need to 30m depth. Spoken to loads of people along the coast, all say that Yongala is the best dive site (not just rated high in Auzzie, rated high in the world)

I did a few dives off Cairns last week, was excellent, went to Briggs Reef - turtles, reef sharks, etc. Company we went with was called Tusa (small boat, 28 people - but they were about to get a bigger boat so just check it out). And Tusa choose the best site for the day (well thats what they say) - they dont go to the same spot everyday. $190 for day & 2 dives
