Anyone got any favourite rail journeys they have been on?

Predominantly for the scenery but for humouress journies to?

I went across USA using amtrak. The san fransisco to Denver leg was gorgeous such a vast range of scenery of all different climates. I got talking to a girl from Denver who seemed pretty cool. She then told me that she was going back home to Denver to be tried on for Murder!! She claimed self defence, I claimed a new cabin!

So I assume you used a condom?

Like many people, using the train for travelling is one of the best ways to get around. Although some long and famous train journeys are nice, such as the Transsib, just using the train on smaller less known tracks is just as fun.
So instead of using buses, which in many countries are even faster than trains, I like to take a train now and then.
The nicest one was probably the traintrip from Erzurum to Istanbul in Turkey, through a beautiful landscape and because almost every traveller uses the bus, we were a bit of a novelty over there, so had a long and great talk with the waiter and cook in the dining carriage. Great time we had.

Cheers Michael

Reading Paul Theroux's Railway Bazaar at the mo, try it.

Dy'a know i've never had a car licence so always used railways. Been on lots over the world in them but the most content i've ever been was on the train to Bangor - north wales. The sun was shining, the train was comfortably cruising next to the white sandy beach and i was listening to Paul Simon. Never ever gonna forget that feeling.

Worst was being woken up to that classical song they use to show mornings here.
Was on the sleeper train to Xian and my head was next to the speaker that played that song full pelt at 5am!!!!

Gonna be catching the Ghan in OZ soon which'll be cool.

I love the train. It's a great way to get around a country and you definitely meet some INTERESTING people

I think my favourite trip was probably Milan to Zurich through the Alps. The day I travelled, the weather was amazing which helped, but the scenery alone (in any weather) is just breathtaking. I was trying to imagine what it would have been like in snow.

It took about 4-5 hours or something, stopping at lots of interesting towns along the way. What stands out most about the journey are the tunnels. Tunnels into the mountains that go for miles! Your eyes are just getting used to the gloom when you emerge suddenly into the sunlight again.

Anyway, it's a spectacular journey. Try it sometime. :)
