We are planning a trip to Thailand, looking to travel around at least 2-3 months. Is it worth trying to save money stopping in hostels because we are working to a budget. or would you say its worth paying a bit extra and to stop in hotels. would we be saving alot and what prices are we looking at spending...? Have hotels and hostels got wifi...?

Thanx

hi,

you won't really find hostels as such in Thailand, rather you will find budget hotels. you can pay as little as 200Baht for a very basic room, or for 500 Baht you should be able to get a basic double with en suite. £30 would get you something pretty flash in the 3 or 4 star range if you use one of the discount hotel websites.

Depends on your budget. If you are comfortable with staying in dorms smelling b.o. and farts from 10 other people - you can save money! If you are comfortable taking cold water showers and sharing a toilet with lots of "fellow cheap travellers" you can save some money! Are you comfortable with squat toilets, that's what you may find in some really cheap places.

Personally I would rather have a private room, with in room toilet, hot water on occasion and a security box so that I don't have to carry my valuables all over town with me.

I would splurge a little bit to have a room with some privacy and safety. I prefer air conditioning over "fan only rooms" too!

If you are not husband and wife, or even if you are - after you have been on the road a while, side by side for 2 months, 24 hours a day you are going to be on each other's case! I would remove crappy living conditions from adding to that discord

In Bangkok you shouldn't have trouble finding hostels, but like anywhere they can vary greatly in quality. I stayed at two there one was pretty close to Patpong and was an HI one that was reasonably good quality although the showers were a little crappy (only ice cold water and had no way for much privacy with the showers being open planned). Another one I stayed at near the river (can't recall the name) it was a really social place, very noisy to limit to little or no sleep and rooms were extremely hot as it only had fans and no a/c. Outside of Bangkok like bex76 said you will most likely wont find hostels but instead only find cheap hotels.
