PERSONALLY l detest text message "speak" - although when using SMS l do use characters such as "u" or "2" to abbreviate due to there being a maximum characters to use.

I find it hard to understand and indeed have to show my ignorance at it by asking what it means! The proper use of English and English Grammer is something that is falling by the wayside in today's modern society and l think that is a crying shame.

I think on the forums and as has been mentioned on this thread many of our members are not native English speakers and therefore have to translate the English into their native tongues before fully comprehending the nature of the thread, therefore to complicate matters by abbreviating English even more and indeed into slang would infact prove to be the opposite of efficient especially if members had to come back and explain themselves over - moreorless having to double post.

People who have chosen to use text messaging in their posts have met with resistance. Members, not Mods, request the poster to make their inquiries in full English to make it easier for everyone to understand. The reaonsing is simple - if one can not be bothered with typing out the words properly, the members can't be bothered taking the extra time to decipher the cryptic crap and offer a response.

Text messaging isn't efficient. Unless one is posting from their phone using the 12 button keypad, which is highly unlikely, what's the point? But, if one thinks that's a time-saver for forum posts, I'm sure members will find it a time-saver ignoring it too.

To (badly) paraphrase Lynne Truss, it is a lazy writer who puts the onus on the reader to decipher what they're trying to say. She was speaking about the misuse of punctuation, but I don't think it's a stretch to apply that to text messaging, too.

Text messanging has its place. Its place: crowded bar. If and When you are trying to get a hold of friends or they are trying to get a hold of you it is nearly impossible to hear them at a crowded bar. Thus, text messanging should be used in this location. NOT at dinner, movie, while driving (unless your completely insane), or doing anything else for that matter.

Text messanging should not be used in any other circumstance, nor should its lingo be used. This is simply because it is lazy and needs to be deciphered. The lingo came about because it is more efficient on a cell phone, but if you had a full keyboard in front of you, I'm not convinced that one would save much time. However, if you want to look less intelligent then by all means use text lingo in your everyday life.
