hi,

i stayed in a place called 'My House' which is a budget hotel on soi rambuttri. its just round the corner from the main backpacker area of Khao San Road and is a sociable place. they play films every night in the lounge area and there is a little restuarant - both good places to meet fellow travellers. there's also an internet cafe on site. i paid 500Baht for a double en suite room (low season). there are several other guest houses on this street too which are all probably pretty similar.

You can try Green House at Soi Rambutri or Sawasdee Bangkok Inn in Khaosan Rd.
And there, i am sure you will meet lots of backpackers.

I will follow suit and also recommend a hotel on Soi Rambutri. But I won't recommend just one because they are all the same. Just take the bus from the airport to Kao San Road. Walk to Rambutri (literally only 2 minutes), check out a couple of the hotels (including Green House and My House just mentioned), and pick the one that seems best to you. I tend to stay at Bella Bella out of habit, but I think I've stayed at most of them at one time or another. They all offer pretty much the same thing.
Unless you are arriving in Bangkok between about midnight and 6am, there really is little need to book a room in advance. Once you arrive in the Kao San road area there are so many hotels and fellow travelers that finding a room and a bit of comfort is incredibly easy. Don't worry about it.

woody84, I think if you stay in KhaoSan road area you will find fellows quickly :)
I stayed in ViengTai hotel and BhimanINN. Quite expensive (800-1200 TBH) in comparison with other options in area (prices start from 200 TBH / room), but very quiet and comfortable.

p.s. By the way, I will arrive to Bangkok Nov, 2 in the morning and fly to Chiang Mai immediately.

You can try for a booking at the Suk 11 Hostel, it is on Sukhumvit Road, Soi 11. This hostel is popular with backpackers.

Always mention what you want to pay for your hotel/hostel per night, it helps narrow the choices down.

This Suk 11 Hostel is not in the Khao San Road area. It is in an area with a lively nightlife, easy access to the Skytrain rapid transit service, cheap eats and lots of street vendors. There are lots of cheap hotels in this area. Khao San Road does not have any nearby Skytrain stops.

Good luck.
