I have recently planned my trip from Cairns to end in Sydney for New Year. I understood that there would be limited hostels, but on looking, its not just limited, I cant find anything, (apart from one really expensive hostel where I have to be for 9 nights)! Can anyone help? Any other cheap sleeping options?

Cheers,

Helena

have you tried hostelworld.com. and the yha website? I was in Sydney for Christmas and New Year 04 and stayed in Base backpackers - i booked in the july but they might be worth a try. 'Wake up' is a large hostel in sydney so it might be worth giving them a try too.

Thanks for you help. Unfortunately, yes I had already checked hostel world (which had the one expensive hostel called Surfside backpackers left at AU$65 per night and you had to reserve 9 nights). Also as the two hostels you listed are very popular their reservations were full a while back from what I have seen. Thanks again though.

Any other help would be much appreciated.

mmm its a tricky one. there is also hostelbookers.com and obviously TPs accommodation section. hotelclub.net also offer accommodation but its going to be more expensive. maybe also try googling sydney hostels and getting in touch with them direct, as there may be some hostels that do not offer the option of booking online so you won't see them on any of the websites. i have heard of people booking in august before for new year in sydney so i reckon you will find something.

Hostels have almost totally been booked out for many months now in the New Years time frame in Sydney.

Cheers very much! Its possible that if I turn up there may be a hostel that doesn't have online bookings. Its just a bit of a risk. xox

Just so you know i think that nearly all hostels will expect you to book in for at least 1 week if not 2 over the christmas and new year period.
