Anyone have any insight on which Islands better?
I love diving and snorkeling, hoping to a fair bit of that - especially hoping to see a whale shark!
I hear Utila has better chance of seeing them, but theres not much on the island compared to Roatan. I also hear Roatans beaches are better..
Im kinda imagining Ko Samui (Roatan) Vs Ko Tao (Utila) in Thailand... Is it anything that?
You're about right
Roatan's got beaches, Utila not
Diving's better on Utila, but not comparable to Thailand
There's not too much to do on either island but diving, hanging out and partying - does it for me anytime
Thanks for the reply.
Do you mean to say that Utila has No beaches?
Problem is im going with 3 non-divers, so i dont want them to be bored stiff while im diving.
Also - are there many bars and restaurants on Utila?
I just spent 12 days in Utila (I got stuck, was only supposed to be there for 4). I loved it! Utila has 2 beaches. One is a public beach, and the other is private (have to pay around 3 dollars to get into it). I went to both, and I liked the private beach better... less crowded, chairs to sit in, and a place to buy drinks. From what I hear Roatan has the better beaches out of the two. I was there with 2 divers, and 1 non diver. My friend still had a great time even though she didn't dive. Utila is filled with young travellers/backpackers and lots of foreigners working/living on the island. The night life was fantastic!!! Some of the best nights through out my travels were spent here! You might have a hard time finding accomodation in Utila, seeing as you will be with 3 people who don't dive. Accomodation is so cheap in Utila, but that's because the places to stay want you to dive with them. We were told that my friend was lucky she was with 3 people who dove, or else most places would turn her away, and save the rooms for people who wanted to dive. I haven't been to Roatan, so I can't say much about it, but I loved loved loved Utila!
Okay, I exaggerated when saying utila has no beaches
It's just that you can't walk around the island; there's mangrove wood and cliffs in the way
In the bay where the ferry's landing and all the dive shops are located you also got the main street and a lot of restaurants, see http://www.aboututila.com/PhotoGallery/NoJo/Photos/Utila-Harbor-02.jpg, that's from the aboututila.com site Utrecht mentioned, so you won't get a thai beach feeling with huts right at the water...but still a terrific place even for a non diver!
Depending on how long you'll gonna stay, I'd recommend renting a house or apartment, no hassel with the non divers then - just asked around at the dive shops or look for to rent signs.
I spent six weeks there over X-mas and New Year and it took me a while to recover afterwards...been a great time
