Im goin to south america in 6 weeks and im wondering if anyone cann recommend a useful phrase book that will help me deal with situations i may encounter..eg directions, booking tickets/hotels, ordering food/drinks or things like this,....
I went for some lessons but i felt a lot of the things i was being taught was irrelevant and i also cant really afford them...
Thanks in advance
The Lonely Planet S\Latin American Phrase book is very good and very small and easy to use.
Most importantly it's LAtin American and not Spanish (which as you'll soon find out are two different things!)
That's what we've got anyway
I have a few guides and one is a lonely planet Peru guidebook which has most of the phrases that you would need and also in brackets how you would pronounce them too which is really helpful too.
Other than that i picked up a Latin American guide book (pocket size) at Gatwick Airport last year for five pound so it might pay you to have a look in a bookstore close by or at the airport.
The real usuful book is a good pocket dictionary (many of them has a section of phrases), with the time you'll increase your vocabulary while you try to talk with patient locals.
And i know a little bit
The book Taffski mentioned has a very funny sex section.
It translates thing like 'Is it in yet', 'I will finish myself off'
Whichever book you get certainly get the Latin America version. So many people in South America speak English now especially Argentina and everyone was so helpful.Although it is good to practise the language.
I would like to know wich did you take??? and in the future tell us your experience.... Thanks
