Has anyone taken a hire car from canada to america? Been looking on different international car hire firms but keep getting quotes with a $300 drop off charge.

Plus, would there be any difficulties getting through customs?

I strongly suggest taking the bus instead. Trailways is the line you want. They run this route everyday.

Here's the link:

You can take a car across the border - you'd obviously want to let the rental company know. The drop charge is pretty standard, there isn't anything you can do about that, other than returning the car back where you got it.

Depending on what your plan is, it might be cheaper and easy to take the bus, as Calcruzer suggested, and then renting a car in your desintations for day trips.
