Lugor79 has indicated that this thread is about Philippines

Hey Guys,

So I'm thinking about traveling to the Philippines in February, during Lunar New Year for 1 week. I'm thinking about flying in and out of Manila and possibly staying a few days in town. I'm looking for pristine undiscovered beaches. Boracay comes up as some of the best beaches in the world but many people consider it over developed and I've heard they some times have water quality issues there. So I'm leaning more towards Palawan.

So my questions are:

1) Is 1 week reasonable time given, travel, time to enjoy (swim, scuba, snorkel), etc... for Manila and Palawan?
2) Any suggestions on Palawan? Where to go, where to stay, what to see, what to avoid?
3) Is Boracay as good/bad as they say it is?
4) Is it reasonable for me to fly into Manila and buy tickets to Palawan same day? Or next day?
5) Lodging suggestions for Manila? Should I hang out there after the beaches or before? Any thoughts?
6) General thoughts and comments.

Thx All!

Hi, Palawan is a good option. If you are into nature and nice people, Palawan is your place. For nice beach and scuba diving. One week may not be enough to enjoy the whole place as it is a big island that has so many things o offer.

Places to go, Honda Bay, Coco Loco, El Nido, Coron, Busuanga, Underground River,

Depends on how you want your holidays to be. If you want parties beside the beach, a few drinks, nice spa, and all those touristy and luxury type, Boracay is your place. If you want quiet and nature, underdevelop stuff, Palawan is your place. Although you can get luxurious accommodation in Palawan, but not as many as Boracay. Please remember that Boracay is just a small island. Palawan is a big island with small islands. It is hard to compare. Depends on where you want to go in Palawan acually.

If you are in the Philippines for a beach holiday and to spend some nice quiet time with your mate (companion), then staying in Manila wouldn't be nice. Because Manila is far from quiet. But if you want to go clubbing and night life, I'll say stay in Manila a couple of nights. But that decreases your time in doing the beach things.

Hang around Manila before you go to the beach. Beach / water sports are tiring, you may not appreciate the nightlife and malls after your beach stuff.

My heart belongs to Palawan. But thats just me. All your questions are based on how you want your holiday to be. So best of luck and wherever you go, just be aware of wonders....

Hi JZ.

Its a good time to visit - not too humid.
Boracay is good depending on what you want. I have read your profile and I would say Palawan will suit you rlove of the outdoors and photography.

1) 1 week is reasonable and actually just about right.
2) 2 places, 1 resort which is lagen or miniloc islands of el nido resorts - www.elnidoresorts.com; check it out. If your skin is sensitive, then watch out for mosquitoes and bring some OFF lotion. Take lots of pictures!
3) Boracay is good. It has a lot of everything but I associate it more as fun. If you shuold go there, it is best when it is the summer months.
4) You should pre-arrange. You dont fly to wait and buy tickets.
5) If you want to shop then Palawan first then Manila. If you dont care too much about shopping, Experience Manila for a night and 2 days probably and see how different or not it is from other places you have been to. You can also take a lot of street pictures.
6) Depending on your budget, stay in the Makati Area. There are hostels for less than 15USD and real nice hotels for USD 110. :)

Anything else? Just have fun. People here speaks english and will always smile.

Boracay

1. FINE SANDS SMOOTH AS BABY POWDER! they say its the best in the world.
2. devoid culture!
3. commercialized and soon to be an urban wasteland.
So catch it before it turns to another Manila.
4. It has a lot of beautiful people who think they know how to party like Paris Hilton.
5. It has various kinds of accomodations, thanks to the foreign backpackers who take care of the island.

Palawan is a HUGE piece of island. If you have lots of money like Naomi Campbell go to AMANPULO.
Boracay can be a backpackers paradies but some islands in Palawan are for the elite travellers. Some resorts in Palawan are ultra expensive.

1 week is enough. You will love the Philippines more the less you stay here.

MANILA... its Metro Manila. Whats there to see? Uhm... Beautiful people who can speak English like Native speakers.
There are huge malls and some club scenes... But if you are not into such treat, a day is enough.

Other islands to visit:

1. BOHOL
2. CAMIGUIN
3. DAVAO

and CEBU

Thx guys!

Planning on going with my girlfriend. I'm looking for a more natural holiday. However I generally like to go to a major city and check out the atmosphere, be it shopping, bars, clubs and/or historical monuments. Which is why I want to spend at least a day in Manila just to say I've been there.

For lodging my requirements are pretty simple: running water, flush toilets (pour flush works) and no bugs... Tho I think we'll spend a few nights in a few medium-upscale resorts just cause this IS a vacation.. :)

I'll do more research into Palawan and I'll get back here if I have any questions!

Hey all!

I too will be arriving in the Philippines in Feburary from Hong Kong. I will be flying into Manila.

This is part of my round the world trip and I plan to stay for a month.

I have read the previous responses but I wondered what you would recommend for me.

This will be my first real beach destination and I am very interested in natural beauty.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Thanks,

Matt

Natural beauty! I just went to an island off the coast of guandong, China. I won't name it, but it look like Greece.

As for the 7,107 islands of the Philippines, My German friends in China are raving about Boracay.

Go to DAKAK in Western Mindanao and Davao in the East.

BOHOL, is also a favorite among european tourist.

Lemme know when you guys are in town (Manila) 'coz I'd be happy to meet with you and give you a personal tour around the city. Y'know how it's somehow different to be going around with a local :)
