Fiji - where to stay?

Travel Forums Australia / New Zealand & The Pacific Fiji - where to stay?

Hi all,

Me & my girlfriend will be in Fiji for just a week in April '08, as part of our RTW tour.

I think we are mainly looking for a relaxing beach holiday, instead of a bus-hopping trip.

Where would be the best place to stay, considering we are only there for a week? I've done a bit of research and to me the Yasawas group of islands seems like a good shout, as its relatively close to Nadi airport and has supposedly got nice beaches and good snorkelling opportunities - also the Mamanucas group seems like a decent option too. Has anyone been to either? any views?

If not, any suggestions are welcome and appreciated.

cheers
Ian

If it's the well worn tourist track you want then the Yasawas and Mamanucas are the place to be.

If you want to se more of the real Fiji then have a look here http://www.levukafiji.com/

We are going to Fiji for one week during May and were having the same problems.
Beachcomber etc look a bit studenty and seem pricey but we do want to have fun.
Any other suggestions?

I stayed in the Yasawas for a week. It was absolute paradise. My boyfriend and I picked an island that wasn't used by awesome adventures so there wouldn't be the party crowd near us and we found the most amazing place. Have a look at http://www.beautifulpacific.com, they are a fijian company rather than a big travel agents. There are a couple of islands that don't use awesome adventures, you just have to persevere with the search to find them, but its well worth it.

"a tiny paradise on the stunning island of Waya. Set in a private beach setting overlooking the stunning mountain ridge above Yalobi Village, this traditional resort has just two bures ensuring a peaceful holiday away from commercial tourism. With no generator, no electricity and kerosene lamps at night, this is an escapists dream with a picturesque beach, excellent snorkelling and is a great base for hikers who want to explore the hills of Waya. However, amenities here are basic and the atmosphere very laid back making this a place for tolerant independent travellers ONLY."

"a small resort set on the point of a glorious white sandy beach overlooking a turquoise lagoon towards the rolling hills of neighbouring islands. This is a good place to settle down with a book, take in the tranquillity and perhaps engage in a few light activities like line fishing, snorkelling, kayaking or trekking to a nearby village. However, amenities, services and food provisions are basic making this a place for backpackers and tolerant independent travellers ONLY."

Both sound very promising-Thanks for the link http://www.beautifulfiji.com/
