I've not watched the movie, but have never heard of such a thing before so I think it is all Hollywood and not real life. Closest thing I've heard about is where you can get cheap rental vehicles for the purpose of relocating them to the place they belong ie if someone hired a car in San Francisco and dropped it off in New York, seeing the car belongs to the rental company in San Francisco it is needed to be relocated back to the depot in San Francisco. To do this instead of sending staff of the company right across the country, they will get some customers to do it for them and only charge them a very small amount of money. Doing this does come with restrictions of various things and sometimes you may even get paid money towards petrol etc. So it's not like you could take 10 weeks to drive from New York-San Francisco with this option because they may only allow a maximum of 14 days when you'd require much longer if you wanted to stop and enjoy places along the way.

Actually, this is completely real. I haven't actually been one so I can't comment on the experience. But I found out about this option while during research on getting cheap tickets. A little more info here, http://wikitravel.org/en/Air_courier. Two major courier companies are Air Courier Association & Air Courier Travel
