Travel Forums Europe How to travel from Turkey to Greece?

hi all..

pls advise as to what would be the best way to travel from Turkey (Istanbul) to Greece (Athens):

Ferries:

it seems to me like there are many operators provide services travel from different part of Turkey to different part of Greece. If i want to travel the above mentioned route, how am i suppose to connect myself?

Trains..

Is this option better than the 1st option? the quotation obtained from the website is 67 Euro one way travelling on the 2nd class berth. therefore i would assume the return fare would be 130++Euro. this can be quite killing as i am travelling on budget.

Plane:

wondering if there are any budget airlines that fly the above mentioned route..

any input would be so much appreciated.

No there are no, budgetflights between Istanbul and Athens. I presume the distance is, just too short to make it an economical succes. Because of the geology of the region, you are passing between Istanbul and Athens, trains are not that fast, as you think when you look at the map.

If you would go for fast, then I actualy would almost recommend to fly to Germany (Berlin, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt) from Istanbul, and back to Athens, with a connecting flight from the same airport, a couple of hours later. Or maybe you can find other connection, with cheap flights from places like Bucharest or Budapest.

If I were you I would take a good look at some of the ferries, and see if you can connect to Athens by train from one of the ports in Greece. I think budgetwise, that will likely be the cheaper option. But maybe it is better to forget about Athens on this trip, and leave it for another visit in the future, when it fits in better with the travelplans. (because you are talking about a return ticket in your post, this means you will have to return to Istanbul)

There's also a coach from Istanbul to Thessaloniki, dropping off at various place in Northern Greece on the way. From memory, it takes about 23 hours - it's actually fairly modern, comfortable and cheap, but it is a long haul.

There is a bus from Istanbul directly to Athens and vice versa. It is operated by the OSE and runs daily except Wednesday. Costs about 68 euros and the journey is about 22 hours.

prefer bus instead of a train. it's 220 Turkish Liras for return. from Istanbul to Athens.

www.varan.com.tr busses of varan are as comfortable as a five star hotel! there are some other bus firms you can find at otogar in istanbul but they're not as comfy as varan.
