hmmm,

I have some plans to head to south east asia in the next few months for about 6 weeks, the probably for me is picking the right places and countries to visit as 6 weeks is really not that long.

So the main sites and acitivites I would be interested in are as follows;

1. Seeing temples and other beautiful historical structures - will almost definitely go to Ankor Wat, but I am interested in other places that may be just as amazing but less well known, anything from sites in jungles to buildings in cities to awesome museums.

2. Beaches and Islands - would like to hear of any places around South East Asia that are less well known and thus have less tourists but would still be considered to be island or beach paradises. Somewhere were you can basically live right on the water, in some sort of a hut and drink, smoke, swim and sleep all day without being hassled.

3. Mountains - can anyone recommend some good mountain hikes they have done, places with awesome vistas and even better sun sets/rises. The higher the better.

4. Festivals - ideas about cultural or otherwise crazy and bordering on insanely weird festivals.

Countries I am considering are Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar........so, tell me what you know so I can make a good decision.

cheers!!

Alex,
There are plenty of temples buried in the Cambodian jungle. Take a look at Andy Brouwer's; Tales of Cambodia. Also Gordon Sharpless; talesofasia.com have many entries on out of the way temples in Cambodia. Banteay Chhmar looks like what you have in mind.

Take a look at Koh Jum & Koh Lanta for your beach hut experience, just off Krabi. I will let others chime in on festivals and hikes.

hi, here are a few suggestions:
Seeing temples and other beautiful historical structures - Definitely angkor wat as you said, and Bagan in mynamar which is equally as amazing. luang prabang in Laos has some gorgeous buildings, also jim thomsons house in bangkok, the museum of ethnology in hanoi, mandalay hill in myanmar.

Beaches and Islands -sihanoukville in cambodia might be an option - i know its getting more popular but should still be a nice place to chill.

Mountains - if you are keen on trekking and have time to do Malaysia at some point, taman negra and cameron highlands are good places to trek. Also Kalaw in myanmar, sapa in vietnam and northern thailand.

Festivals - songkran in thailand is the only one i have been to but it was really good fun and pretty crazy in bangkok and chiang mai. obviously would depend on the time of year you were going.

Hope these ideas help a little.
