Hello,
I'm leaving New Zealand in about a week and flying into Sydney. I was wondering if anyone had any good recommendations on budget hostels to stay. I would like to be in or close to the city centre the first night so I can walk around and explore the next day. After that I want to head to either Bondi or Manly beach for a few nights. Which one is best for surfing and relaxing? Also, is the "Sydney Pass" worth it for transportation? Thanks for any help.

Hi. I don't know anything about surfing on Manly or Bondi beach, or about the "Sydney pass", but for hostels you can check out http://www.yha.com.au/index.cfm?yhaHBtoken=34772090106441139815&. I think it's a benefit having an YHA membership, then you get discounts on all YHA hostels. I hope this was helpful:)

i stayed in base backpackers which is in a good location right in the centre. it's clean and a decent enough place. You can book on line on the Base website.
I have been to both Bondi and Manly - but not sure which would be best for surfing. I didn't get that sydney pass as many of the sights are within walking distance of each other in the city centre, but it could be worth it if you plan to travel further afield.

I used a Green Pass when i first got to Sydney as i travelled around quite a bit, don't just stick to the same boring tourist bits! curl-curl and dee-why (part of the northern beaches chain) are always better than bondi! and are easy to get to from Manly! Maroubra is also good, Coogee is a good place to stay long term, if Manly is full up.

If I was a backpacker in Sydney, I'd probably steer clear of Kings Cross. I was there recently and it's a fairly depressing place. Some of the hostels in the main street looked really awful. I would stay either right in the city, around Central, or in Glebe. The only thing about the Central area is that it's near Chinatown so you may feel more like you are in Asia than Australia.

Both Manly and Bondi are good for surfing, although Manly is probably better. There's a nice little, consistent break at the southern end. The downside of Manly is that it's a ferry commute to the city. It's not the cheapest or quickest commute (around 40 minutes?), but it's breathtakingly beautiful. Between the two, I'd probably pick Bondi.

I don't know what the "Sydney Pass" is, but if it's like most travel passes, you probably only get the value out of it if you plan on spending most of your waking moments on a bus or a train.

Send me a private message if you want more detailed information.

Granted that Kings Cross might not be the best place in sydney to stay, but im in a hostel in Victoria street and there are a few others as well that are clean and friendly and fairly cheap at $18 a night. I have been in the "cross" since April and yes there are some weird and wonderful things to be seen here its not as bad as you say.

Still, 1 persons dream is another persons nightmare

Victoria street is quite nice. It's the ones in Darlinghurst Road (down the Mcleay Street end in particular) that don't look too crash hot.

Best coffee in Sydney is at Toby's - corner of Macleay and Manning in Potts Point.

Hey, I'd stay in Wake up right near Central Station for the first few nights, it's a really nice hostel and there's a pretty good bar downstairs if you want to meet people. It's also pretty central (duh! ) I live in Bondi so personally I think it's nicer than Manly, not sure about the surf though cos I'm only learning (how HARD!!! But FUN) (Anyone know anyone that gives cheap / free lessons by the way?!! I'm hopeless!!!) But the best hostel I think in Bondi, is The Lamrock, and it's right on the beach. Whatever you do, steer clear of Noah's, it's awful!! Let me know if you need any other info!
