Hello there everyone.

Thailand is somewhere i have never thought of going to until i saw a video at www.thaiairways.fr, since then, i have spoken to many people since and have had mixed reactions. Some say it is like paradise on earth and others say the same but also warn me of certain things. I really would like you people to supply me with a list of pro's and con's of visiting. I already know about the fantastic currency ratio we receive and that you can live good for a small amount of money, but what else is there, can anyone recommend good places to visit and such.
Having seen the video, i am super tempeted, but maybe you peeps out there can persuade me more, let me know of any stories you may have, i am very interested to learn more.

look forward to reading your responses.

Hello Mip1980:)

There is not a country in the world, without cons as well as pros.
But here goes for a few of each for Thailand.

Pros
The food is good and exotic. When u fancy something familiar there are also plenty of places selling Western style food.
The incidents of violence in Thailand is very low, so u should be safe from physical asault and violent robberies.
U can rent a beach hut with a bathroom, big double bed fan and balcony right in the beach, for less than 5 euros per night.
People are peaceful and not openly aggressive towards others. Even when the government was overthrown, last year, it was done peacefully.
Sunny warm weather. Even in the rainy season, there are many hours of warm sunshine on most days.
U can have a good time in Thailand, on relatively little money.
The tourist police are very good at handling the problems foreigners have.

Cons.
I dont think they take enough care of environmental issues, and the mass tourism to Thailand is not helping the situation.
There are a lot of scams, to try to swindle tourists of their money.
Foreigners are often seen as strange and tasteless.
Cruelty and bad car of animals is all too common.
There is an incredible amount of sex tourism in Thailand.

I love Thailand - greeat food, gorgeous beaches and friendly people, loads of interesting culture and history and some great scenery. I felt totally safe in Thailand but there are scams, as Mel says, that tourists need to watch out for; but this shouldn't spoil your enjoyment of the country as long as you use your common sense.
i would recommend going there and I'll definitely be back one day. :)

First off let me say........Thailand is great! :)

But, about cheap living, if you are from somewhere and you are used to living with good food, decent apartment/house/hotel, etc etc then it is totally wrong......basically, if you come here and want to live like the majority of Thai people then you will probably live for VERY VERY cheap......but the majority of Thai people arent living the same as say the majority of most westerners. If you want to eat steaks and fries, and baked potatoes, pizza's, etc etc you'll most likely be paying out about the same, it's not as cheap as most think

it's like this......I live here in Bangkok, and i live almost the same as I did when I did in USA (food, comfort, nightlife, etc) and I pay MORE for everyday living here in Thailand!

hope that makes sense lol

oh, and dont listen to anyone who gives you advice about Thailand and hasnt even stepped foot here. I heard it from a TON of people before, hear comments like:
"isnt that where they eat rats and dogs and bugs and stuff?"
"doesnt everyone have AIDS there? and bird flu? etc"
"isnt that where they have little kids child labor and prostition?"

mostly negatives is what i hear from the ignorant people from my home area in America

.....sorry, i forgot what i am saying now lol, i'm sidetracked

oh, and, some positives:

1. Thai nightlife is amongst the best I've ever seen in the world!!!! beer bars, girls, disco's, nightlife options are abundance, have late hour clubs, open til 6am or 8am (i LOVE that) hehe

2. the food is just hmmmmmm, cant even describe, the food is freaking AWESOME!!!!!!!! maybe takes a while to learn to like it, but once you do, you will always want, crave, need it hah

negatives:

1. traffic in bangkok is like the worst i've ever seen LOL, BUT at least there are options, before going anywhere you can think what you want? tuk tuk? taxi? BTS (train system)? motorbike taxi?

2. the laws, this legal system is a mess, have some of the stupidest laws in the world, but shouldnt effect your daily life, just annoying sometimes when you hear the laws, or new laws get passed that are just retarded

Well, these things are true, to some extent.
They eat bugs. I have seen them for sale in the restaurants and markets. I did not try them. I dont know about rats and dogs. I never saw those on the menu.
HIV and AIDS are at epidemic level in Thailand, so those who are promiscuous should protect themselves, or better still, dont be promiscous in Thailand. And there have been quite a few cases of bird flu reported recently.
There are too many incidents of child prostitution. Sometimes when a family is poor and desperate, they sell their child into the sex industry. I have not read anything about other types of child labour, so dont know.

Thailand is a wonderful place and well worth visiting, but let's be honest here. Some of you guys don't see Thailand all you see is a tourist destination.

Pros for the tourist are;

cheap travel, accomodation, food and nightlife.
stuning scenary and culture (if youre willing to go off the beaten track)
some of the best beaches in the world (again if you go off the beaten track)

Con's

None if you play by Thai rules.

To put a few things into perspective for some of our respected members;

Robberies and violence are quite common in some of the main tourist areas, against tourists. Gun violence is quite common in rural areas too (had a gun pulled on the wife and myself last night by a guy who cut me up on the road, and I live out in the country, no shit!)

Foriginers are often seen as strange and tasteless? Yes and well deserved. Wife and I sitting in a bar/resteraunt in Ayutthaya tonight with Thai friends. Brits sitting getting shitfaced in shorts, no tops on. Ok in some beer bar in Pattaya but out of order most other places. Group of Italians, shitfaced, making complete tits of themselfs. Thai staff going about their work with a smile on there face but asking "why farang like this?"
They bring it on themselfs.

Getting ripped off? see above, they deserve it.

Poor care of animals? Not so. People who have animals that work, ie buffalos, dogs and elephants (proper working ones) do not mistreat their animals. Soi dogs that you see on the street are strays, most soi dogs are rather well fed but the average Thai can't afford to take in every stray and pay for treatment of mange or other aillments that are common.

Selling of children into the sex trade? I think you'll find that this happens in quite a lot of the poorer nations. I think you may be confused with daughters leaving Issan and ending up in the sex trade. If you knew the history of Issan then you'd know that in the past women held the rights to the family land. When crops failed then women, & daughters, would leave and go and work in the cities, no doubt a percentage ending up in the sex trade, so they kept the family land. By the way allthough sex tourisim is a big thing in Pattay, Phuket and Bangkok it's nothing compared to the sex trade that caters for Thais only! I belive that you'll find the sex tourisim trade is just as big in Malaysia, Vietnam, Cambodia.

Drugs, up to you. There's been a few pulled by the boys in brown for sparking up a spliff. It's illegal and if you're caught you'll suffer.

I live here and have two companies here but I'll always be a farang. Living here lets you see things that you'll never see as a tourist, however many times you come.

Anyway rant over. Come to Thailand and enjoy yourself.

Land of a thousand smiles, and this one means?

Would u have some suggestions, about where the off the beaten track places are Draggons?
I am looking for someplace new, to go with my kid, the next time I am in Thailand.
Probably best to send me a PM, unless others express an interest, so the thread does not get jacked for info that only I want. ;)

yes i agree, but it's just annoying that those negatives are usually what people mention about Thailand (and most of Asia actally) when I mention about going here, or living here etc etc

i say this, are you looking for child labor and prostitutes? if so then you'll find it, but most of us who are "normal" and living "normal" lives wont be running into that on our daily basis

as for bugs, i'm guilty of eating them lol

and disease, disease is everywhere, always have ways to best protect against them, sucks that majority of Americans i know label Asia as that dirty disease filled countries
