I was wondering if anyone had any advice about the best place to spend carnival. We're thinking of either Salvador, Rio, Sao Paulo or Brasilia, but we've heard that Salvador can be a bit unsafe, and that it's best to party on a special platform attached to hotels, etc rather than to join in on the street as there are a lot of muggings. Is it really that bad?

Any advice you can offer is greatly appreciated!

You should come to Olinda and Recife.
Maracatu, Frevo, Cabloquinho ....

Boa Viagem.

Olinda is a good suggestion.
In my opinion Rio is still the best carnival.
Salvador is great if you like BIG crowds.
Forget Sao Paulo and Brasilia. People from there will leave the city for carnival. Sao Paulo is nicknamed 'the tomb of samba'.
Salvador, Rio and Olinda are all good options, but completely different ways of celebrating carnival.
Brazil is multiple, and carnival is multiple as well. In each one of the places I´ve recommended you will find many different ways of carnival parties.
About safety: it is a completely different culture. Some kinds of behaviours that are considered normal in your country can be considered offensive here and can put you in danger. If you don´t try to impose your culture you will be safe. Look around. See how local people dress, what´s their attitude. Do the same. Our culture is one of kinship. Being different can be dangerous. Of course I am oversimplifying and generalizing to explain it in short, but it´s the best I can do now.
I have more info in my website -snip- . It is my commercial website, but you will find helpful information there.

My husband and I have just been looking for accommodation in Rio during Carnival - the prices are shocking!

We were thinking of booking somewhere in Rio before the carnival starts - in a cheap hostel (before the prices rocket). I've heard that some families open up their homes for tourists during carnival.

Apparently Ipanema and the south of the city (Zona Sul) are good areas in terms of accommodation during Carnival. Would it be possible to find accommodation this way in these areas?

Thanks very much for your help!

Hi there!

we are arriving in rio for the carnival on the 27th, and are finding exactly the same problem with accommodation....the prices rocket from the 1st and you have to book this ridiculous 'rio carnival package' for 5 days. Does anyone know any cheaper/more flexible options (where we dont have to saty for the whole week)?

Cheers, Salma

If you want to go to Brazil and especially to Rio for Carnival, you will have to pay the price. If you can’t afford it, stay home. Try booking a room in New Orleans for Mardi Gras instead. See if it’s any less expensive.
