Were a group of aussie gals looking to go holidaying with some friends in Cancun, Mexico. Can anyone recommend a great hotel close to the nightlife? We are all 21-22 years old and wanna go for some partying and fun. We are also wondering when is the best time to travel also? And what sort of 'activities' we can participate in.
Any info would be great!
I stayed at the Grand Oasis all inclusive. Lots of people right around your age range. They have nightly bus trips to the bars in town. They have events on the hotel property too, like foam parties and such.
Most of the all inclusives along the hotel strip looked nice.
We stayed at Le Meridien and it was very nice but not all inclusive. Anywhere on the strip is pretty cool and easy to move around from. The closer to Punta Cancun or the NE coast, the closer to the action. Here is a decent map with all hotels: http://www.cancun-map.com/map_cancunzh_ing.asp.
The La Isla Plaza was just redone and is party central on some nights but real partying at the trendy places like Margaritaville's, etc. Just follow everyone else, plaza on the map usually indicates mall and partying in the NW of the Hotel Zone. Take the city bus everywhere it runs up and done the strip, looks like it will fall apart and is DIRT cheap.
For some fun day trips I really recommend the Garrafon tour to Isla Mujeres. It is a relaxing day and the trip out is nice and they own the eastern portion of the island so you can snorkel, canoe, swim, hike and it is really beautiful. Make sure you do the Garrafon though, the others stink.
Also the speed boat snorkelling tour was cool over the jet ski style so make sure you find those. You get to drive your own little speedboat
Actually all the touristic area (where the big hotels are located) are near the night life, you just need to cross the street. So any hotel you choose will be near a night club or may be 20 night clubs.
You Aussie gals have some of the most amazing beaches in the world at your fingertips and you want to come to Cancun?
OK, OK, I won't lecture. The Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico is very beautiful, and if you want foreign (non-Mexican) nightlife, Cancun is the place to be. Imanta and others are right in saying that anyplace on the strip is near the nightlife and the city bus/shuttle will take you to all the hot spots very cheaply. Check all the travel websites for good deals - some of the large hotels on the strip look like Las Vegas hotels and are quite expensive but there are good deals to be had.
Many of the larger hotels have beachfront activities day and night, including dances, bands, beach volleyball, etc. There are also nightclubs, but it's been awhile since I've been and I don't remember any names.
Imanta is also right about Isla Mujeres -a great day trip. Also Xel-ha (pronounced Shell-ha) for snorkeling and Tulum as a scenic beachfront Mayan ruin site are very worthwhile. Please don't visit this area thinking Cancun is all there is to it!
Most hotels are either on the beach, or across the road from the beach.
Cancun has two parts; the old town, and the tourist area. The latter covers a large "T" shaped area that covers a large area. Most of the shops, etc are near the intersection of the "T", but there are some womderful places towards the end of the tourist area.
There are too many hotels to mention really, and it depends on your budget also. There are a few hotels of the Fiesta Americana chain hwich are great, luxurious, but not cheap. Whatever hotel you choose, just keep in mind that your booking might change when you arrive. We had booked (and paid) at the Kin Ha, and when we turned up we were told they had overbooked, and they shipped us off somewhere else. The other place was a dump so we only stayed there one night.
Also, there are 10 times more hotels in Cancun than what any aussie travel agent will tell you about. You'll probably be offered a choice of 5 or 6, when in actual fact there are 100 or more. Also, booking from Australia is quite expensive, and you can get some really good deals if you just front up, but I can't imagine you want to do that from Australia.
The nightlife is awesome, as it the shopping. The cheapest shops are in the "old town".
Try not to go when it's the US Spring Break, as the place gets packed.
What else. There's a public bus service that costs next to nothing that covers the whole section of the "T", and is one tenth of the price of taxis.
The beaches are great, and there's "life" on the beaches as opposed to the nice, but boring beaches of Sydney. You can hire jet skis, go water skiing, etc, etc.
Also, there are day tours to places like Xel-Ha, and some other place whose name I can't recall, and these tours are good. Just remember that you can haggle with the cost of a lot of tours. Also, there are some ruins nearby so see them if possible.
Lastly, empty out the hotel minibar of it's overpriced Coronas, and buy your own at the supermarket for next to nothing, and put them in the fridge.
I've never stayed at a hotel in Cancun, but I took a cruise into it and I can tel you that it was teh best time I've ever had. There are hotels and bars on every corner, so you will not have a problem finding a party. Deinately go during the middle of March, around sring break time, that is when the city gets full of college students and it is insane.
P.S. Don't sing karaoke at Senior Frogs, you will get booed, no matter how good you are, and they will make you go down a slide out of the bar and dump you in the Gulf. Kinda fun, but your soaked with salt water for the rest of the night.
I don't know about Cancun - I only spent a night there as it was too touristy for me - but if you want somewhere with great nightlife, on the beach, and with lots of things to do, such as windsurfing, diving, parasailing, shopping, etc - then I would go to Playa del Carmen. It's only 1 hour from Cancun but it a lot more laidback (and cheaper!!). Check out www.playadelcarmen.com or www.mexperience.com/guide/beaches/playadelcarmen.htm
If you do go to playa you must go to the Blue Parrot Hotel. It's beach front bar has a nightly fire show that is amazing. www.blueparrot.com
Oh yeah - the fire show at the Blue Parrot is TOTALLY cool. That is one of the nicest beach bars I have ever been too.
I confirm the fire show at the Blue Parrot is TOTALLY cool!!!
