If you have the luxury of having a car, I would recommend to go towards the Alps. If you take the normal highway from Salzburg, you are not gonna see a lot of the Alps. You can go and discover the Lakes, that are towards the East/South East of Salzburg. The Salzkammergut, which has beautiful small towns like Hallstatt. This would give you some great views at the Dachstein Mountains. You could also drive south of this group of mountains, via Ramsau/Schladming. From there on, you can travel east towards Vienna.

Another worth to remember is, that very close to Salzburg, you will find Werfen. If you are there in the right season, you can make a trip from Salzburg to Eisriesenwelt. (check www.eisenriesenwelt.at). This is an ice-cave, where, the water, that comes into the caves, freeze, and creates sculptures of ice. Remember to bring a jacket, because it is cold inside (hence Ice-cave). Werfen also houses a beautiful castle that can be visited.

If you really have some time to spend in Salzburg (you don't mention). It might be worth it to drive, to one of the valleys of the National Park Hohe Tauern. This is my favourite part of Austria. In my opinion the most beautiful valleys, can be found between Mittersill and Krimml (love the Habachtal and Hollersbachtal), but that might be a little too far of your route.
