I've got about 15 days to see the Borneo bit of Malaysia.
I've been reading up on the area and want to try and fit in caves at Miri, Mount Kinabalu, probably some white water somewhere, and some island hopping in Sipadan or Turtle island etc.
Lonely Planet warns of travel difficulties getting to/from the national parks, having to wait 3-4 days for flight confirmations to get anywhere or taking long boat trips.
This is probably a difficult and annoying question but realistically if i'm trying to get from Miri to KK to Sandakan can I realistically do this in 15 days and still take in some serious sightseeing like Mt. Kinabalu ??
Caves at Miri - do you mean Niah or Mulu? I guess you mean Mulu as you talk about flight difficulty. You could give that a miss, and go to Niah instead as an overnight trip from Miri.
15 days should be OK. Fly Miri to KK, do the mountain, then fly or go by road to Sandakan. From there you can do Sepilok orang utans, Kinabatangan, Gomantong Caves etc. Turtle Islands is an overnight trip but you are back by 9am or earlier. Not worth going to Sipadan unless you want to dive.
Hope this helps.
That's really useful thanks, as Sipadan you can't stay at overnight anyway so i'll look around for other islands, it's just for the beaches really.
RE: the caves, Yes i'd meant Mulu as I'd read about Deer Cave and the bats but i'll read up on Niah

Sounds fine to me the advice from someone who lives in Malaysia. I agree about forgetting Sipadan. Apart from anything else Australian advice on travelling to Borneo says to be very wary of going to Sipadan. Miri is of course in Sarawak State whereas Mt Kinabalu is in Sabah State. However Royal Brunei runs flights both areas and will put you down into KK and then it is off to Mt.Kinabalu. White water is probably over other side or in middle of Sabah State from memory. Great country nonetheless and wonderful people. have fun.
