Okay so I have been in Japan for the past month and am leaving the day after tomorrow. This was my first international flight. The flight here was easy, and transfering was a breeze, that I was worried about. Everything was good except they never shipped my luggage from O`Hare to Narita. Anyways ...

The problem now is ...

I have to go through customs coming back, right? Well i`m nervous about this since I have never done this before, and my connecting time is only an hour and a half ... and I have to catch this flight!! I`ll be arriving at O`Hare at 9:20 in the morning. Please what is the customs process, how long will it take? [i also need to go from terminal 5 to 1!!] ... will I make my connecting flight? If I don`t is it the airports fault? Will I be able to take the next flight to Boston? ... I can`t stay overnight at an airport & i`ll have no extra US cash on me.

My experiences with O'Hare have been pretty good. Usually, it takes about a half hour to get off the plane and clear passport control. Once you clear passport control, often (if you're lucky) the bags are already offloading. You can always head directly to your airlines station to let them know that you have arrived and ask if they will hold the plane so that you can make it or find out if they can get you on another flight if you don't. I would think that worst case scenario is that you make the flight and your luggage does not or you (and your luggage) are on the next plane. The key is to let the airline know that you need to make the flight both before you leave Japan (tell them when you check in) and as soon as you arrive in Chicago. There are probably other flights heading into Boston later that day. Your flight gets in pretty early so I wouldn't worry about it. Good luck and hope you had a great trip.

You should be okay. Red-eye flights very rarely run late, in my experience. They don't have to contend with too much traffic taking off, and have lots of time to make up any minor delays in the air. If there's problems, it would most likely be traffic / weather when landing, but that should equally impact your departing flight.

Weather shouldn't be too much of a problem this time of year. Thunderstorm season is over, and it hasn't started snowing yet.

From T5 to T1, you need to take the train.

If you don't make your connection, is it the airports fault? Not that they would ever admit, or would the airline admit blame either. However, in most cases of missed connections, the airline will put you on the next available flight out. Landing at 9:20 am, you should be able to get a flight to Boston that day.

What airline are you flying? United?

GregW - Yeah i`m flying United, but from Japan to Chicago I am on Japan airlines, so I doubt they`d hold the plane since it`s different carriers. I transfered to a connecting flight in O`Hare going to Japan, I pretty much know how to get from T5 to T1 .. same as before but backwards, haha. Except going was easier since no customs and crapola like that ... and no re-checking luggage.

soupatrvlr - Thanks for all your advice, i`ll deffinetly take it. Oh and I had a wonderful time ... I`ll miss Japan a lot. haha.

I`m in for a loooong day tomorrow ... 13 hour flight then probably missing a connecting, no fun :[ But thankfully, as you said, my flight gets in early so there should be room on other flights!
