Hiya - have you decided as to where you will be spending NYE in Austrailia? If you are thinking of Sydney you may well find it very difficult to find accomodation there.

We spent last NYE in Sydney and it was wonderful but we booked our accomodation the previous March. The fire works were great - we had a great viewing point from Circular Quay.

I spent NYE 2004 on sydney harbour watching the fireworks and it was fantastic! we got there about 1pm and got a really good view from somewhere near Mrs Maquarie's point.

As Heather said, you need to book your accommodation asap if you haven't already - I booked mine in July for that Christmas/new Year. Accommodation in Sydney is generally more expensive than elsewhere in oz anyway - i think over xmas and new year i paid around $33 per night for a dorm bed in base backpackers in central sydney.

I haven't first hand experienced it, but the best new years experience in Australia to be had is meant to be in Sydney watching the huge fireworks show go off. It's on TV every year all around Australia which is what a lot of Australian's tune in to when counting down to the new year. This year I am making an effort to fly to Sydney for a couple of days just for the purpose of spending New Years Eve there like I've wanted to for years. Flights are extremely expensive now (if they even exist when you want) and accommodation is non existant on new years eve at anywhere remotedly cheap and is very very limited (almost non existant) for the days leading up to that. Even the hostels that have got a couple of spare beds for the days leading up to new years eve are up around AUD60.00+ for anything that isn't a complete trash heap.

Bugger Sydney. Do NYE on the Gold Coast, Whitsundays, Keppel Island, the Gold Coast. Why would you want to come all the way down here to just spend your time in a city?
