I have planned 2 weeks to make the trip from Cairns to Bribane. Decided not to fly as there is too much to see on this coast. Can anyone tell me best way to travel and see as much as I can? Would like to fit in the Whitsunday islands enroute too..
Well if you don't want to fly the bus would be the best option to stop and see places along the way. Don't expect the Whitsundays to be at all cheap, because they aren't priced for backpackers if staying on any of the islands.
Cairns to Brisbane, the cheapest way to go would probably be Premier bus. It only runs once per-day, but the times are pretty decent.
As for the Whitsundays, if you dont get sea sick, you should be good. I went on the Pride of Airlie for $300 for 3 days 2 nights and we stayed on South Mole Island. All in all it was pretty good but it was mainly a party boat. I will say if you arent picky, and are on your own or in a very small group, you can probably leave booking your Whitsundays till you get to Airlie beach. That way you can get the standby rates on what ever boats are available. My family friends did that and managed to find a good boat with a private cabin for quite cheap that way. It is risky though.
Or, if you do get sea sick, there are one day ventures that you can take for about $140 and they take you snorkling on the outter reef. Lunch and transfers etc are included. Um lets see what else ... oh yeah and there is an Island Hopper you can do if you are more intersted in the sights on the Islands. not sure what all is included in those, but you can visit up to 3 islands for between $99 - $120 something.
Other than that, if you are looking to do the backpacker thing or a cheap package, check out PeterPans travel, Global Gossip, Travel Bugs, etc. PeterPans did my east coast package for pretty cheap and they give you vouchers for things like free meals, free drinks, entry into clubs etc.
Best of luck!
Thanks for that! I actually travel really bad (boats worst!) so the island trip sounds good to me! Will check out the other stuff too.
