sharp, if thats £175 UKP for a WHV dont do it!!!!!! you can apply on there website and it will only cost you about £75-80.00 trust me, dont use them companys, most of the stuff they tell you, you can find out for yourself.

I definately say the same thing, DON"T USE companies. It's pretty easy over the net and I received my visa confirmation next day. So it saves you money and you'll get reply much quicker.

Good luck! And welcome over!

Hi everyone.

Thanks for all the advise on this forum, its really helpful. I'm planning on leaving around 10th of November. I'm starting in Cairns and working my way down the coast.
I'm pretty nervous about the whole travelling alone thing though. Is it pretty easy to meet people and make friends?

Thanks,
Oli

Hi,

no peoblems meeting people.... you're on the east coast so providing you like a drink and to socialise, you'll be fine. Get yourself into a hostel and see what's happening on the notice board.

remember loads of people are also doing the same as you... so you won't be alone!

try and do the organised events etc. as this gives you an excuse to chat to people without the "cold call" sort of thing :)

Enjoy

Taffski.

PS If you go diving.... go diving further down than cairns... the reefs still alive and it's a bit cheaper.

Yeah, I do like a drink. I'm pretty easy going n normally make friends quite easily. But still anxious as its Oz and not the local pub.

As for diving, I've spoken to a few companies about some boat work. I am doing my padi course atm etc, and if all goes to plan, a company will exchange some deck work with free accomodation, food, beer etc on a boat and 2 dives a day for two weeks..... That should be pretty good!!

I'm planning on staying in hostels when on land. Got all YHA stuff and VIP card. Does anyone know which is best?
It seems like ages away!!

Oooh, I'm so jealous of all you people heading over there with it all ahead of you. I am just 5 months home from my year in Oz.

I travelled with Friends when I first arrived so from that aspect I can't give much advice. My friends left in Oct though and I stayed on for a year so I have experienced being on my own in Oz.

It's the easiest place in the world to meet new people. So many people travel alone that it's all geared for that. People will strike up conversation much easier than anyone would at home. While I was travelling alone I generally chose hostels that had a bar attached as that way I could comfortably sit there and get chatting to people rather than have to specifically go to a bar.

I think in general the best place to start is with your roomates. Strike up conversation there and then you can buddy up. You'll come accross people doing the same route as you and if you click with people you can work together to travel the same times. Honestly, it's not hard. I met so many people along the way and many that had only met while travelling.

I agree with the others, get your WHV online direct from Oz immigration. MUCH cheaper. I would have cost me €160 to go through a company here in Ireland but I got it online direct for €113...

I worked in office work in Sydney for 6 months and when I started, in Aug, there was loads. I went travelling for a bit and when I came back lots of people said that there wasn't so much work anymore. Other friends came to Sydney before Christmas and struggled to get work too. Offices wind down over Christmas and there is little or no recruitment - same as home really- and also they try to avoid the backpackers at that time as they know they won't stick around long.

As for money, I had saved as much as I possibly could before we left. We spent 3 months in SEA first and spent about €1k a month there. I had about $8k or so when I arrived in Oz and we did our travels first. I travelled for 5 months straight without working before I had to go home for a while. When I came back to Oz I had $3k but I worked straight away as I had planned travels to NZ and Fiji so needed the money for that.
