I've just spent the evening doing online summersaults, trying to find the best possible fares over Chistmas. We're flying from Montreal to Belfast, leaving December 21 and coming back January 2 or 3 - prime travel real-estate time. So far, the best bets look to be Air Canada at a whopping $2679.46 for 2 - else bmi at $2695.46.

I've even tried the Montreal to London route, then hopping aboard easyjet to Belfast. But between the 85 pouds per way apiece (ouch) on easyjet, plus the train from Heathrow to Gatwick and back, the costs pretty much even out. So, lovely TPers, do any of you know of some loophole, secret knock, special handshake, alternative airline, or an incredible-deal site that I can look up?

And, if you had to choose between Air Canada and bmi, what would you pick? I don't know a thing about bmi, other than they'll probably serve tea before they come around with the coffee.

Thanks, as always!

bmi & Air Canada are both part of star alliance T - l would reckon you are probably looking at a code share so would be on the same flight - Air Canada to Heathrow then bmi to Belfast City Airport.

I would go with the cheapest price you will be on the same flights anyway!

Is there nothing cheaper from Montreal to London? I just checked - British Airways are £366 Montreal to London on those dates?

Is that any better?

Thanks, Heather.

The problem is the rest of the trip. In my wonky math:

366 pounds x 2 = $732 CDN x 2 people = $1,464

Then there's easyjet at 85 pounds x 2 = $170 CDN X 2 people = $340 x round trip = $680

Plus the train from Heathrow to Gatwick which is about 20 pounds X 2 = $40 CDN X 2 people = $80 X round trip = $160

So that comes out to about $2,300. I've put Neal on the case, too (he has a 2-week stint at some office in Belfast which consists of doing just about nothing!). We'll see - hopefully there's a deal our there somewhere!

Ok try bmi ( flights from Heathrow to Belfast City. to see if you get connections they may not be any cheaper than easy jet BUT it will cut out train to Gatwick!

OOh - good point. I'll try that!

Just checked - the bmi flights - if you were coming over a day earlier or leaving earlier or day later - the costs do go down!

Are you cemented to those dates? Zoom airlines flies from Montreal to Gatwick. and there are still seats available at $199 each way (per person) for days around those dates. They don't have anything for those specific dates.

Really, you picked about the worst time to travel. Everybody wants to fly on those days.

I saw those Zoom prices - they'd be perfect, but we have very limited time off at Christmas. I'm alreday eating into next year's vacation days. I can't leave before the 21st, but I just found out I can stay until the 6th. Will have to check the prices again!

Thanks, Greg!

Tina - l checked Montreal to Dublin - its £446 US Airways it seems - prob have to connect in States but at least you will be in Ireland and there is an Airlink bus that travels between Belfast & Dublin with numerous connection times. OR maybe a really kind family member will come and lift you in Dublin - or for a small fee l could do it!!!!!!!!!!

Im reckoning about $2140 for 2 - cheaper again!

You're fabulous! I shall check again. We'll probably get a lift up from Dublin, too. Yay!
