I'm American and currently living in Thailand, anyone know the process (if possible) I need to go through to get my car from America to Thailand? Know the costs? Website info (can message me)? etc etc

Please let me know, I just signed another 1yr lease on an apartment here and I'd love to have my Volkswagon :)

Thanks a lot

Yes! you can! You will have to pay about 270% import duty, probably calculated on the (new) retail value of the vehicle in Thailand and then after a few weeks or months you will have your shiny VOLKSWAGON??? - a LHD car in a RHD country. Get a quote for insurance while you're at it.
At least it will have all the useful gadgets that it comes with in the States - like a HEATER! Does it have air? Does it run on gasohol or diesel?

what is a "LHD car in a RHD country"????

and yes, my car has heat, aircon, etc etc

...and to answer your question, it runs on gasoline (not diesel unfortunately)

My point is you are wasting your time! Especially with a Volkswagon!

LHD = Left hand drive / RHD = right hand drive

Joke! you don't need a heater in Thailand!

ahhh ok, well, i've seen a few cars that have LHD i'm assuming the cars from USA, sucks about the pricing

guess i'll look into buying a motorbike (for my neighborhood area) and a bicycle also, and possibly long term renting a car

thanks guys

....also, i got a reply from BangkokBob.net about this topic too, he said if anything that it's probably better off shipping my car thru Malaysia, that way it's officially in Thai only temporarily to help cut my costs

there are ways of doing it but the car has to be worth the effort.
Apparently you can partially dismantle it and bring it in as spare parts...unlike Oz it isn't illegal to have LHD here - most of the import cars you see are either old left behinds from US army personnel or the odd import that got left here somewhere along the line brought in with a company or something like that.

Zach,
You have been around Thailand long enough to know this importing a car idea is not going to fly. My friend in Pattaya bought a used Honda coupe and loves it. Now he can carry his golf clubs when hitting the golf courses around Pattaya. He got off his motorbike after getting hit a few times. I still ride motos when in Pattaya, but it is always a dicey proposition. It is just when you are going to fall off or get hit, not if. A car in BKK is a liablity, not an asset, IMO. Get a nice Honda Wave or similar, buy a good helmet and ride defensively. Good Luck.

vegasmike, thanks for your suggestions, yes there are some things i've been thinking:

1. i WANT my car from USA here, but if too expensive then forget it (and it sounds to be a hassle and very expensive)

2. i have been looking at motorbikes, seen a few i liked for only about 40,000baht, which isnt bad at all

3. also i've been looking into getting the Honda Jazz or the Toyota other car (similar to Jazz i forgot the name tho), they are VERY small and VERY popular here, i like to be small for parking purposes

thanks a lot everyone for input

i'll let ya'll know what i end up doing :)

(i think motorbike, and a bicycle are 100%, and buying a car is a possibility, but if i can find a way to lease a car for 1-2 years would probably be the best bet for me i guess)
