I'm will be in Hong Kong at New Year (1st Jan) but will be travelling independantly. Does anyone know if they have big celebrations in Hong Kong and if so, any recommendations from someone travelling independantly as to where to be and perhaps some accomodation to meet other travellers in the same situation? ....cheers!

Local cultural celebration or general Jan 1st countdown celebration? You can always go to pubs at Lan Kwai Fong on any day. People gather in that area to countdown on Dec 31st, but I think celebration of the new year still linger around the next day.
This site will help you with what you can do in Hong Kong

click on 'Welcome to 18 districts' and it will show you a lot of places you can visit

Good luck being there on the 1st! You're either gona love it or hate it.

I remember being there once, and it took about 2 hours to cross the road - because you're not allowed to. Instead, you are forced to walk really far down the street, cross there, and walk back.

But you are squashed among thousands and thousands of people.

If you are with a group of friends, perhaps not sober, it could be fun I guess!

As with places to go to meet travellers, lan kwai fong is the best place to go (if u can make it there!). Make sure you leave to go there early (really really early!!!)
