My fiancee and I are thinking of going to Tasmania for our honeymoon from 26 December 07 to 4 Jan 08.
Is that a good time to be in Tasmania?
We have about 8 days to spend for our honeymoon.
I hope to get some recommendations on where we should go. We do intend to rent a car and drive around. We are thinking of doing a little hiking and a little biking (but not off road).
In terms of accommodation, anyone has a good recommendation? I would like to cap it at about US$150 per night.
Hi Lionel. Yes that is right time of year if you prefer warm to hot weather. It won't be or shouldn't be as hot as mainland Australia but good enough to get around in summer clothing. Nights can still get a bit nippy. You could travel the coastal roads if you get a car. Tasmania is not all that big. Start at the top in Burnie/Devonport and work your way around the coast either east coast or west coast or you could go down the middle. Launceston, second biggest city, is in middle but close to top of Tassie and the capital Hobart, the biggest city, is down the bottom on the water. It has a lot of history and some wonderful markets on the weekends. Not far from Hobart is Port Arthur the convict settlement and there is also historic Richmond not far away. I would think your $150 US is plenty but if it is for entire day that is different kettle of fish. If it is only for accomodation you should be able to get a nice double room for $100US and spend the rest on your dinner and perhaps breakfast next morning. Obviously you will be taking a camera. Tassy is a very pretty place and if you can get into the Franklin River wilderness area it is something to behold. Incidentally you get to Tasmania from mainland Australia two ways, by plane or by ferry on which you can take a car. Best of luck and congratulations prematurely on your wedding.
this is coming in to the peak tourist season but weather wise it's the best time to go as tassie can get quite cold in the winter.
the most beautiful parts of Tasmania (in my opinion) are Freycinet national park on the east which includes wineglass bay, and cradle mountain on the west. Port Arthur is really interesting and is worth a day. Hobart is also nice - try and be there for the Salamanca market on a Saturday.
Bruny island is off the beaten track - I went there and hardly saw any other tourists. there are some nice walks to be done here.
I flew with jetstar.com.au from Melbourne to Hobart for $100 return. I finished my trip in Launceston and got an intercity bus back down to Hobart which took a few hours and was a nice drive.
tassie is beautiful - a great place for a honeymoon!
