Do they really pull pistols on people when they arrest them?! It is a pretty big deal if a cop pulls out a pistol in Oz; they do not even have them in the UK.

It really depends on the crime, the criminal, the area and a whole list of other things. Generally, an officer will pull his weapon if there is a threat of bodily harm. Honestly, it's a pretty big deal if they pull their weapon here also. And again, you are seeing only a very small segment of a very large system - sensationalized for the viewing audience. My suggestion is to view these reality shows as you would any other - that of being unrealistic and purely designed for entertainment. Design a program about the majority of police and what they do during their shifts and you'd have a very boring show that would last one episode.

Basically, most Americans go through their daily lives without ever encountering an officer except passing them on the street. No one ever sees the good side of things as it doesn't make for good television. My brother was a sherriff and then chief of police for many years. He never drew his weapon except on the firing range. Granted, he did not work in a major metropolitan area but most officers take pride in not having aimed their weapon at another human being.

I'm not sure about Oz or the US but in Canada I have heard that the RCMP only draw their weapon if they are going to use it.

It is making me think twice about travelling there.

Yes indeed. U should go to PR China or Iran, or in fact any other police state instead.

But doesn't the PRC and Iran have a lower incarceration rate than the US? I believe that the US actually has the highest rate of incarceration in the world, throughout its entire history.

Probably. They just execute people instead.
It is possible that PR China execute up to 10,000 people per year. Nobody is sure exactly how many thousands they execute, but this is a number that leaked out, via a government employee. Most human rights organisagions report 3 to 4 thousand executions per year in PR China. They cant count exactly how many, because the information is secret and what they know depends on what information leaks out. People in PR China can be executed for crimes like tax evasion.
Iran executes somebody, more than every second day. In Iran, they execute women for falsely reporting being raped. If they do not have the required 4 male witnesses, then they are lying.
And some countries dont bother to incarcerate people. They just lob off limbs, for crimes such as petty theft.
